Two US companies eye Assam for LNG pilot project

Two American companies, Liberty Fuels and Centennial Contract Service Inc, have proposed to set up liquefied natural gas or LNG project in upper Assam.

Raymond E Tato Junior, chairman, Liberty Fuel, and the chairman of Centennial Contract Service Inc met Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Wednesday and discussed the setting up of the pilot project.

Mahanta suggested to the Assam Gas Company Limited to extend full cooperation to the American companies in setting up the project.

He also suggested investment in hydro-power sectors in Assam and assured the US company executives full cooperation.

The project would provide clean, cheap and environment-friendly fuel for heavy and small vehicles. The cost of conversion to LNG consuming vehicles would not be high and the long term benefit would be more. Moreover, the life of LNG consuming engine would be more and wear and tear would be less.

Apart from the LNG project, the American companies have also proposed providing drinking water in remote areas of the state by using solar energy. The companies intend to take up such project on long term maintenance basis.

They have also shown interest in taking up existing highways for converting them into express highways. Besides, the companies have proposed to set up ropeways connecting Umanand and Kamakhya temple.
