Positive trend helps pivotals to firm up; Nifty up 12 points to 978.20

Pivotals further firmed up on buying support from bull opertors and institutional investors on the National Stock Exchange today.

Mirroring the positive trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index appreciated by 11.60 points to 978.20 points from 966.60 points of the previous day. The CNX Nifty Juninor Index shot up by 36.30 points to 1809 from 1772.70 points while the S&P CNX Defty moved up by 9.40 points to 791.75 points from 782.35 points.

The S&P CNX 500 index rose by 12.93 points to 680.60 points from 667.67 points and CNX Midcap 200 improved by 12.50 points t0o 609.89 points from 597.39 points of the previous day.

The total turnover, involving 58.85 million shares in 229,121 trades, was Rs 15.59 billion and the debentures traded were valued at Rs 2.96 millio. Today, 654 securities advanced, 289 declined, 74 remained unchanged while 69 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: Cochin Refineries which shot up to Rs 138.80 from Rs 126.50, Hindustan Petroleum Rs 185.25 (171.50), Tata Chemicals Rs 60.60 (56.10), Tisco Rs 88.45 (81.90) and Great Eastern Shipping Rs 20 (18.70).

The top losers were: Mahindra and Mahindra which declined to Rs 223.25 from Rs 239.90, ABB Rs 292 (300), Reliace Capital Rs 31.40 (32.15), Cipla Rs 1370 (1400.30) and ICICI Rs 46.75 (47.40).

Pentafour Software topped the turnover list with Rs 2.20 billion, followed by Satyam Computers Rs 2.08 billion, ITC Rs 1.16 billion, Reliance Rs 1.13 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 996.6 million, Ranbaxy Rs 777.9 million, Silverline Rs 698.3 million, Rolta Rs 549.5 million, SBI-New Rs 494.4 million, Tata Tea Rs 287.7 million, L&T Rs 284.7 million, HCL-HP Rs 270.9 million and BPL Rs 242.6 million.

The other actively traded counters were: ACC Rs 233.4 million, Tisco Rs 209.6 million, MTNL Rs 200.3 million, Dr Reddy's Rs 165 million, Sterlite Rs 150.2 million, BHEL Rs 148.2 million, Square D Software Rs 137.5 million, Hindustan Lever Rs 137 million and Global Telesystems Rs 124.5 million.
