Nifty improves to 1078.35, gains 6.25 points

Pivotals gained marginally on buying support from bull operators and financial institutions on the last day of the current settlement at the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the positive sentiment, the S&P CNX Nifty index improved by 6.25 points to 1078.35. It had closed yesterday at 1072.10.

The CNX Nifty Junior index also inched up 1.85 points to 1919.50 while the S&P CNX Defty rose by 5.50 to 879.80 points.

The S&P CNX 500 moved up by 3.70 points to 738.71 points while the CNX Midcap 200 edged up 0.96 to 647.18 points.

The total turnover in 338,880 trades involving 115.57 million shares was Rs29522.4 million. The total value of debentures traded was Rs7.862 million.

While 467 securities advanced, 666 declined and 93 remained unchanged, 95 securities hit their price bands.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: Arvind Mills, which improved by 8.03 per cent to Rs32.95, Colgate (8.01% to Rs191.50), State Bank of India (8%, Rs226.75), Nestle (5.77%, Rs550) and Procter & Gamble (5.65%, Rs917).

The top losers: Indian Rayon, which declined 6.49% to Rs79.95, Grasim (6.33%, Rs171), TVS Suzuki (6.11% to Rs460), Industrial Finance Corporation of India (5.47%, Rs12.10) and Reliance Capital (5.03%, Rs33.05).

ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs4487.3 million, followed by Pentafour Software (Rs4045.1 million), Satyam Computers (Rs3225.4 million), SBI (Rs2208 million), Reliance (Rs1436.5 million), Silverline (Rs1316.5 million), Rolta (Rs1046.5 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs867.9 million), Digital Equipment (Rs661.1 million), Castrol (Rs639.8 million), HCL (Rs522.8 million) and Infosys Technologies (Rs499 million).

The other actively traded counters were: Tata Tea (Rs477.3 million), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Rs400.4 million), Larsen & Toubro (Rs373.6 million), SquareD Software (Rs365.9 million), TISCO (Rs347.4 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs321.5 million), TELCO (Rs314.5 million), ACC (Rs245.2 million), Ranbaxy (Rs236.3 million), Global Telesystems (Rs235.7 million), Himachal Futuristic (Rs218.5 million) and Aptech Computers (Rs197 million).

The NSE's wholesale debt market witnessed trades worth Rs7889 million. The 11.40 per cent government loan maturing in 2000 was traded for Rs1,220 million at a weighted yield of 10.80 per cent.

The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs1,150 million at a weighted yield of 11.04 per cent.

The 12.25 per cent government stock maturing in 2008 was traded for Rs700 million at a weighted yield of 11.97 per cent.

A repo trade was transacted for Rs100 million at 8.5 per cent for a repo term of 14 days.

The total turnover in debentures was Rs61.746 million today.
