Nifty up to 1078.85, gains 0.5 points

After opening on higher note, pivotals lost their initial gains on selling pressure and ended marginally higher on the opening day of the current settlement at the National Stock Exchange today.

Mirroring the positive trend, the Standard and Poor CNX nifty edged up by 0.50 points to 1078.85 points from 1078.35 points of the previous day.

The CNX nifty junior index zoomed up by 55.45 points to 1974.95 points from 1919.50 points and the Standard and Poor CNX moved up by one points to 880.80 points. The S&P CNX 500 index appreciated by 9.07 points to 747.78 points while CNX midcap 200 index rose by 19.53 points to 666.71 points.

The NSE recorded the highest turnover of Rs 31.40 billion today in 3,55,578 trades, involving 105.72 million shares. The traded value for debentures was Rs 4.05 million.

About 637 securities advanced, 442 declined and 97 remained unchanged. 144 securities have hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX nifty gainers were: Arvind Mills, which shot up by 8.04 per cent to Rs 35.60, Telco 8.01 per cent to Rs 193.45, P&G, Ranbaxy and Tata Power 8 per cent each to Rs 990.40, Rs 481.70 and Rs 72.90 respectively.

The top losers were: SBIN, which declined by 7.98 per cent to Rs 208.65, HDFC Bank 7.97 per cent to Rs 57.75, Bank of India 7.88 per cent to Rs 22.80, GE Shipping 6.47 per cent to Rs 20.95 and Orient Bank 5.21 per cent to Rs 33.65.

ITC registered the highest turnover of 4.6 billion, followed by Satyam Computers with 4.22 billion, Pentafour Software 3.67 billion, SBIN 2.28 billion, Reliance 1.16 billion, Rolta 1.15 billion, Silverline 1.09 billion, Ranbaxy 1.03 billion, L&T 949.2 million, Telco 908.1 million, Ditial Equipment 616.1 million, MTNL 592.6 million and ACC 588.7 million.

The other actively traded counters were: Tata Tea 556.6 million, Zee Television 499.8 million, Infosys 433.3 million, Glaxo 399.6 million, Tisco 255.7 million, Sqrdsfware 248.4 million, Bhel 239.8 million, Hindustan Lever 226.2 million, Castrol 215 million, Pujitsicim 195.5 million and Colgate 190.5 million.

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trade worth Rs 4.89 billion. The 12.25 per cent government stock maturing in 2008 was traded for Rs 430 million at a weighted yield of 11.99 per cent. The 11.40 per cent government loan maturing in 2000 was traded for Rs 350 million at a weighted yield of 10.83 per cent. The 11.75 per cent government stock maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 300 million at a weighted yield of 11.08 per cent. The total turnover in debenture was Rs 69.06 million today.
