Telco, Tisco and ITC hog limelight; FIIs, FIs energise market; Sensex soars 112 points to 3820.25

BSE Sensitive Index

Equities continued their skyward movement with the Sensitive Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange gaining hugely by more than 110 points, crossing the psychological barrier of 3800-points in a volatile trading session today.

The foreign institutional investors once again dominated the BSE market and continued with their buying spree at major counters which helped boost the market sentiment.

Marketmen said that the FIIs, who have been responsible for the successful run of the Sensex since the last one week, continued from where they left off last Friday. Heavy buying was witnessed at major counters like Telco, Tisco and ITC. The domestic financial institutions proved to be the parallel runners aptly supporting them.

''It was a largely volatile trend at the market and the market sentiment has been a lot merrier today,'' said one market player who attributed the sudden interest of the FIIs in the share market to the recent political stability at the Centre after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections.

Mirroring the trend, the BSE-30 index leapt to its day's high of 3820.25 points which was also its closing figure. It had opened higher than Friday's close at 3752.79 points and touched a day's low of 3740.49 points. It showed a gain of 112.50 points from its previous close of 3707.75 points.

The BSE-100 also recorded smart gains as it opened at 1645.92 points and went on to reach a day's high of 1671.01 points. It touched a day's low of 1643.53 points and finally closed at 1670.14 points to register a gain of 41.73 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex also rose to close higher at 378.09 and 147.32 points from their Friday's close of 368.63 and 143.56 points respectively to register gains of 9.46 and 3.76 points.

The number of scrips traded were 1,438 and the number of trades for the day were 202,136. The volume of shares traded was 59.8 million and the total turnover for the day was Rs 16.11 billion.

Tata Tea, Telco and ITC were the major gainers during the day.
