Heavy buying by institutions, operators pushes Nifty up 51 points to 1132.30

Share prices recovered sharply on heavy buying support from local operators and institutional investors at the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the bullish phase, the S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 1098.00 points, touched the day's high of 1132.80 points, a low of 1097.85 points, before closing at 1132.30 points, showing a net gain of 50.80 points from the previous close of 1081.50 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior zoomed by 79.20 points to 1968.45 points from the previous close of 1889.25 points. The S&P CNX Defty rose by 42.55 points to 915.70 points as against the previous close of 873.15 points.

The S&P CNX-500 and Midcap 200 closed higher by 32.62 and 27.23 points to 772.28 and 671.68 points from the previous close of 739.66 and 644.45 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 187 billion which came from trading of 74.04 million shares. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 1.99 million.

Today, 742 securities advanced, 168 declined, 50 remained unchanged while 113 securities hit their price bands today.

State Bank of India topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 2.84 billion, followed by Satyam Computers Rs 2.44 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 2.02 billion, Reliance Rs 1.67 billion, ITC Rs 1.57 billion and Ranbaxy Rs 1.17 billion.

Other actively traded counters were Zee Telefilms, Telco, L&T, Tisco, ACC, Silverline, Tata Tea, Rolta, BPL, MTNL, Infosys Technologies, Castrol, Square D Software, Global Telesystems, Digital Equipment, Sterlite, Hindustan Lever and HCL-HP.

The top five S&P CNX Nifty gainers were ICICI Rs 61.60 (Rs 57.00), Tisco Rs 109.65 (Rs 101.50), L&T Rs 245.50 (Rs 227), Telco Rs 183.75 (Rs 170.10) and MTNL Rs 183.40 (Rs169.80).

The top losers were Indian Hotels Rs 332.50 (Rs 338) and Orient Bank Rs 34 (Rs 34.05).
