'People will have to start learning about derivatives'

Ramesh Shrichand Damani says it will take 2-6 months to figure out the true impact of Sebi's ban on badla.

stockist : the mood is really low today in the markets, what say mr damani?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Hi guys. Welcome to the show. Mood picked up towards the end

Ganesh : Is it worth buying PSI Data at current price (Rs91)?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I have a little bit. Looks okay at current values to me

Praveen : Do U think Satyam's a good buy right now
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it should have a technical bounce post-NYSE Listing.

kitty : wat is ur reaction to sebi's ban on badla?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I think since the decision is made we should try to make it a success. Enormous difficulties exist.

kelly : do you think volumes will fall bcoz badla is not allowed?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : In the short run definitely.

Ganesh : Would there be any major upword movement for Visualsoft shares in next 6 months?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Depends on the earning. If they can do 60-65 crs like last year it would be bullish. However at this time earnings picture is unclear.

beezel : has the market accepted and discounted the ban on badla?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : yes it was widely believed to be scrapped. However the true impact will take 2-6 months to figure out

tarun : Will market be more volatile if circuit filter is removed?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : its a good idea in rolling to remove circuit filters. However it will make it more volatile in the short run

beezel : How do you explain today's movement then?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Market fell and recovered in midsession. Fall was knee jerk reaction. Can the market absorb big selling. That we must test

rita : media stocks are in demand today?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : yes they were all in circuit due perhaps to RBI norms for film funding

stkexp : Which stocks do you recommend for investing now?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I'll give you a couple of themes; Industries are going to go from vertical to virtual. Big plus for IT-enabled sector. IF FDI flow increases we will see a boom in infrastructure. These are some themes to explore

rk : what do u thnk wll be the most immediate fallout of sebi's ban?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : the impact will be felt closer to July 2. People will have to start learning about derivatives.

vaishali : what will happen if morgan stanley reduces India weightage?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I am really afraid of that. It means mechanical selling by funds. Who will write the other side of the trade? That's when you need the speculative community

rnathan : Please advise me about Cyberspace Ltd. Is it worth to hold? pls pls
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Writing is on the wall for the script.

ksraju : how do you see the market of Banks esp. Andhra Bank shares falling///
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : The private sector banks will do well

stkexp : what do u think about the psus? do u think mtnl/vsnl/ cmc are good buys on the bet that the government will divest its stake significantly in these companies?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : If the disinvestment happens it is good. Particularly vsnl, cmc, ibp. i own some cmc

rk : wat is your opinion on carrier aircon? it is doing well today..
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Many of the MNC stocks are going to be privatised. I would surrender at Rs 100. It's a good compnay though.

rnathan : Is it good to buy dsq and hfcl at this level?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would avoid it

ramya : There are MFs which had sold the entire holdings in TEch sector. Howegver, SSI Ltd is still in the top holdings of many schemes. Any idea why so..? How does SSI lokk to you..
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : they may be bargain hunting. Co has diluted its equity too much and slowdown will hurt

sureshbabussb : waht do you think about the MF performance after rolling settlement. will anybody be able to buy or sell large quantities
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : After a gap of 12 months yes. Immediately i doubt it

ksraju : private banks will do well,,, does that there is no hope for banks like Andhra bank.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : That is what i feel.

ragdu : is it the right time to enter the markets
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would wait till post July 2

sanju : forget everthin just tell us wat to buy to cover the losses???
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : there will come a time to buy. It just hasn't come yet.

rnathan : What is your opinion about Rinki Petrochemicals?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Do not follow it

sanju : giv us a tip for tommorow
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : tips is a tough business. I am not good at it. Sorry

stockmarket : I seen that only insider and broker can earn in this market??????? wat u think???
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I disagree. You could have bought infy at 200 in 1994. you didn't need inside info to see that India would be good in tech. It was obvious.

sureshbabussb : do yoy think the options will become poular or the SEBI will bring back carryforward after seeing the volumes in rolling settlement. why the FII support the move when they cannot get out of the market easily after rolling settlement
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : good questions. Let's give the system a try. If it succeeds we are all happy. If it does not at least we know market does not fall because of badla and short sales alone.

vishal : what about hfcl from 2000 to 200 now
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it is going to have a hard time to even go back to 1000. The best is over for it.

bnp : A broker's job is to buy and sell on behalf of a client so how come such positions have got built up ????
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : clients build up positions. It is legal upto July 2

a : Was it a mandate for domestic institutes to prop the market today?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i doubt it

altufaltuvela : do you think the indian markets and the participants are ready for derivatives. how much time before we see volumes
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It will take time. Historically in the US 9 out of 10 people lose money in trading options. It is an institutional product not a popular retail product

sureshbabussb : is there any move to abolish regional exchanges in the future
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : They will die a natural death. No volumes means no revenues

bnp : Now the brokers don like options only futures they say cause it gives more menuvering comments pls
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : See earlier answer on options

Karthik : Online trading increases the depth of the stock market. Do you agree with that.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It doesn't hurt, that's for sure

rnathan : How is Hinduja Finance, Sonata and Vikas WSP? Is it worth to buy at this level sir?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i would wait a few more weeks to get a clearer picture

AMC : Does pawan kumar's exit from dsq reflect the owner's dominance and his intention not to run it professionally.whats your view on the scrip
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : that is a good summary

jack : hi damani markets have become unpredicatable
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : They always were

sadan : sadan asked:why did big stock market agents cheatig small Investors and in this process they are killing them self, cannot some one educate them the law Live & Let Live.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I agree, all cheating is bad. However this may be a reflection of our society also. Corruption is endemic

pandi : What abt. The world monopolistic market in India, China is going to Export Low cost vehicles to india ....
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Consumer wins. That can't be too bad

option : sir, how do you see the profits of tata infotech getting merrgerd with tcs. is it good buy at this times
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : they denied the merger

Gaurav : Considering the FOMC meeting tonight, do u consider this a good time to buy Infotech stocks? Or u still beleive we need to hold on till the middle of July
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i would hold. tech shares without growth is a problem. let us see some evidence of growth

Smruti : sir, with respect to everything and everyone... arent small investors are the ppl who mainly suffer?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : yes when elephants fight the grass gets trampled. But the small investor has many advantages also

ashish : As a buyer is there a future of infotek companies?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : of course there is. The leaders will be different though

NS : Mr. Ramesh, was it only UTI's buying today that kept the market from crashing?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : no one has that much power. It was just well discounted

manojkmenon : sir., you did not answer my question on INFOSYS EARNINGS MODEL..?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : pls repeat Q

deep09 : What's happening to the K-10 stocks, now?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : they are all under a cloud

NS : What do you think will be the policy of FIIs in the run up to 2nd July?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : if a big player wants to exist it will pose a problem

pvm : Sir Dont u think that when option comes and badla are bend the small investor can do the trades? because they dont have so much mony i think now stock market going on money power`s hand
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Options cost even less. However it is very difficult to make money in them

vishal : how will satyam perform on nyse?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : not over the next 6 months

ravindra : Rameshji, i got a doubt when there was news that Tata Infotech and TCS will merge. As a TCS employee I would like to know how the shares will be devided. Because TCS is not a listed company. I now This merger may not happen in near future. But if the samething happens for any other companies what will be the result
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It could be done, it would be complicated but merchant bankers will figure out a way. I hope it happens. Maybe Tata infotech first merges with TCS. Changes name. listing continues

Gaurav : Are tghere any second rung stocks that seem to be growing along the value curve in terms of the projects that they implement abroad? Nucleus Software...?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i have small positions in Onward, Geometric and Subex for those reasons

raju : do u see a further bottoming out of the markets
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : yes. over the next 3-6 months

balan : hello mr damani..our chat last time on badla being banned has come out right..now are small investors capable of handling options?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i doubt it. The odds are against you because of time premium. You can hold a stock forever. Options finish after 1,2,3, months

Ravi : WHAT IS YOUR BET ON HCL TECHNOLOGIES 2 YEARS FROM NOW
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I am not a fan of the stock, My view!

Gaurav : Many infotech companies in India seem to be moving into the design of semi-conductors. Which of these seem to be promising?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : only one i know in moschip? maybe bel.

sadan : Supriya asks: sir I Invested hard earned money to the extent of Rs.4.35 lacs in HFCL, now my fate, is there still any hopes of going up:
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : look tough. Sell and buy an index fund

option : rameshji, you said that tcs denied the merger with tata infotech, is that true
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : that was reported in the press

RShah : Ramesh, u still bullish on PSU stocks, how abt CMC?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : If they get disinvested. GOI is making me wary by the snail pace in which they are going

Gaurav : With the recent economic projection for the next year(7%). How do you think the FMCG stocks will fare?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Nestle made a new high today.(almost) That is noteworthy

RSDamani : hjklh ..badla means revenge in hindi....!!!!
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : good point

himanshu : In A group stocks carry forward will continue or banned
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : read the papers. It is over

Boost : Rameshji, I wanted to know why in India Short sells are not regulated as they are in US. In US short selling is allowed only on an uptick. We do not have proper regulatory measures and then we go Banning these techniques making the marketplace look uninviting. Why sren't such rules that fare so well in other markets not introduced in India ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Your anger is justified. Short sell is the left arm of the market. I beleive it should be free. I do not agree even uptick. That should be reserved for emergencies. Let the market decide a price.

himanshu : what d ou think about BEL,MTNL,TATA telecom
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I like BEL and have just started looking at tata tele

srikant : PL TELL SOME LITTLE SCRIPT IN RANGE OF RS 4-8
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I bought some Indo matsushita appliances for 2.0 Very speculative though

RAMESH : IS IT WORTH INVESTING IN UTI OR NOTPLEASE REPLY ME
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would not do it for my own account

gemzmumbai : mr Damani, how will market react to the new mechanism in terms of liquidity, speculation and regulation?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : hesitantly. Let's try to make it work

dhingra : why all brokers are punished by sebi whereas telka has not discarded all miltarypersons
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i wish i had an answer. It is called injustice

mymymy : Is it a good time to invest in an index fund? Why?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it's hard to pick stocks in this market. Eventually markets always climb back. Stocks don't

acc : what is your opinion about acc?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : cement looks like it will have a good year

Deepika : Ok, yar! Cool. GOod that u answer parallely with the "real" Damani. Can I believe in u, buddy???
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : my name comes as Ramesh Shrichand Damani in a diff color

DTCC : I said..why don't you revamp the entire settlement system for the all stock echanges and have a single depository for the country like we do !
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it may happen

rajesh : I have asked 4 questions and no answers ...
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : try again rajesh. Sorry. It goes so fast i dont see all the Q

Guptam : Do you recommend holding / buy / sell Vikas WSP scrip
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i never understood the co. So avoid it

Prabu : Mr. Damani, can you tell me what factor is the market considering when discounting Satyam's earnings by 8 times while Infosys is being discounted 70 times.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i am not sure of the PE's. Infy is perceived to be a better managed co

mpsan : What happens to medium/small size tech stocks, are they permanently died
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : no the future belongs to the nimble and the innovative

sharebroker : Damani Uncle you have not replyed that what is future of Software Shares

Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i don't follow them. Sorry

mohit : Mr Damani ,do you agree if i said that the markets have NOT BOTTOMED OUT and the 3096 will be tedted again?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i think we have a chance that we will test the bottom over the next 6 months

mpsan : Do you recommend Infosys now?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i have been lightening up on infy.

rambhakt : Mr. Damani, What impact do you feel capital conertibilty will have on our markets. Also, do these open offers justify the value of the stocks in such bearish markets. Are the MNCs not making fools of us.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I want convertibility. It will impose discipline. MNC action are not shareholder friendly. North block needs to wake up. We will have only duds listed if this goes on

Rupali : You asked, mr. damani, will arbitarage business will get hamper...?because badala has banned. You asked, mr. damani, will arbitarage business will get hamper...?because badala has banned.MR DAMANI, WILL ARBITARAGE BUSINESS WILL GET AFFCTED, ASBADLA IS BANNED?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : yes it will. Arbitrage between stocks and futures will be done mainly by FIIs. Too complicated

StockExpert : cipla is performing well but quit soon as many FII may offload it as there are many reports appearing in Europe telling this company is pirator of Intellectual property rights of Brostol Mayer, Boerhinger and Glaxo...and that is true to aan extend...
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : they do reverse engineering and use a diff process. Legal in India but not elsewhere. It is a formidable company and they will fight

akvishal : what is yr qualification
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i am a broker by profession, a mba by education and a student of the stock market by choice

hARISH : Sir do you have a tips emailing list

Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i have no idea about such matters. I hope not

mohit : Mr Damani ,would u agree with me that chartically reliance is due for a sharp correction (330 levels)
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it could happen

StockExpert : the growth rates for these companies wont be attractive next year because statistically the growth rate is on the previous performance...for example...this year if it is 600 crore profits..next year....1200 and next...second reason is...
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : that is unlikely to happen. at that growth rate you would own the world in 20 years. Impossible

aabhas : Hello Mr Damani,How soon do U think Indian retail investors can start trading in options and futures?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : they will find it tough going

RShah : allt he fund managers are talking big on CNBC but their NAV's are plummeting, who governs such things
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i know. long term performance is so hard on markets

gemzmumbai : You asked, mr Damani, when it is known that the Indian mkts do not hv maturity in the case of futures and option instruments, y r they being introduced in this situation?------------------------You asked, Mr Damani, will shorts be allowed post July?-----------------You asked, mr Damani, when it is known that the Indian mkts do not hv maturity in the case of futures and option instruments, y r they being introduced in this situation?

Ramesh Shrichand Damani : less exciting

Jaikumar : IS New Economy going down and Old Economies fetching good results??
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Grasim and INFY might have roughly equal profits. why the difference in market cap when both co's have modest growth.

gemzmumbai : Your answer : Cant fight City Hall: is equivalent to pointing fingers at SEBI, right Mr Damani?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : That was not my intention. SEBI has its own job to do.

Akash : Ramesh.. I think the big guys are waiting to sell into this market
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : that is the Armageddon scenario

Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Thanks for joining in. See you next week. Bye
