The A R Antulay Chat

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 20:42:22 1997 IST):

CYNIC: I honestly believe that Dr Tanwar's case weighed with Kesriji when he gave the letter of the withdrawal of support to the Rashtrapatiji. As far the BJP party is concerned, I for one, don't subscribe to the view that the BJP or for that matter any party is untouchable. You may not agree with their ideology as I don't, but that does not confer a right on me to treat the BJP as an untouchable.

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 20:44:06 1997 IST):

Osteroposis: Agar aap ki nazaar be Congress apne paair pe khuladi mar rahi hai to us se bajaee Congress ke tang tutnee ke aap ke sar kyon tut ta hai?

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 20:44:10 1997 IST):

mog rules!! what chance a non-evasive reply???

manoj (Wed Apr 16 20:47:40 1997 IST):

Antuleji, I just read your statement in Rediff column that if you would have been Atmaram Ramji Auntaly, the case would have been different. What I remembered that, when you were CM of Maharashtra, you were very close to Bal Thackery. I haven't heared a single comment from you after Babri Masjid incident. How come all of a sudden you relised that you are a muslim leader. Are you a muslim leader ?

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 20:48:19 1997 IST):

line??reply?? or conceded??

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 20:48:51 1997 IST):

BPT mog: Firstly, the criminal case -- in which through a private complaint of a private individual, I was involved -- did not entail moral turpitude. It was a matter of raising funds for the cause of artistes through cheques and therefore I don't honestly think that we were serious in saying what you seem to say only to provoke me. But I will not get provoked because in such a serious discussion some lighter moments as you have provided are indeed needed. If only to make all of us relax a bit. By the way, the last of the criminal cases against me was decided by the honourable Supreme Court in my favour on April 1, 1997. Are you now happy that I went through the mill between 1980 and 199?.

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 20:51:03 1997 IST):

Antulay Sahib : I can understand why civil servants have got red lights on their cars, after Seshan's famous statement about them being like prostitutes from red light areas...but why do politicians also have red lights on their cars? Is there a connection somewhere here too? I have nothing against prostitutes, by the way, they vote....

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 20:52:28 1997 IST):

Ravi: My dear friend the politicians are drawn from the people of India who are sovereign. Now there are good people and bad people, in every segment and section of the society. There are good politicians and bad politicians but for God's sake don't tar their faces with the same brush in a sweeping manner as you do. Let us pray that the people of India do not begin losing faith in the democratic polity in our country. But if you keep on calling every politician a crook and scum, the people may well turn to a dictatorship from which our country fortunately has so far been free.

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 20:54:23 1997 IST):

Ravi: Who am I to let the BJP rule? It is the people of India who are the arbitrers. If they so choose who can question their decision?

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 20:54:23 1997 IST):

Oh Sir : I am not stressing on the criminal or other case against you. My questions, please go through them again, are in all seriousness and reflect a fairly decent and serious majority view today, revolve around the viability and relevance of politicians today as well as the surprising knack of Congress MPs in making fortunes, personal, very soon...

kuldip uppal (Wed Apr 16 20:55:48 1997 IST):

i think all the poltican. they are shame for the India. in india is beter of with presedent roll and indian presedent will Mr.T.N.Sesan

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 20:57:31 1997 IST):

Sir : If the people ofIndia are really sovereign, why are they mistreated by their own servants, the politicians? On one side you MPs want to say that you are not liable since you are not public servants, on the other side you call your subjects sovereign? What is this? You are a politician, are you a subject of the socereign, and thus accountable to them, or not? Or only quote Indian Constituition when suitable????

H D Deve Gowda (Wed Apr 16 20:58:13 1997 IST):

Mr Antulay what do you think will be the futuere course of action now politically speaking.

ravi (Wed Apr 16 21:00:42 1997 IST):

Sir, we are in the United States right now and love our country deeply. Most of us have come here for the opportunities and the facilities that are available here. A lot of us want to return back .. Give us one good reason to return back ..

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 21:00:51 1997 IST):

In this complete Comedy that has been going on, with the grace of Chacha bum-bum and his pomeranians (kutta jee..tcchtcch tcchtcch..kuttajee ko burfee do..ice cream do..you know what I mean??..in this whol;e comedy of chacha bumbum, how many MPs have offered to resign to align their Conscience with the Constituition?? Do rthat, and you may still come back with a thumping margin, or have you forgotten to read the pulse of the people? Kyaa Antulayji, bahut din hogayaa, dockyard kaa paani nahee piyaa, sab bhool gayaa...???

KESHAV BALIRAM (Wed Apr 16 21:01:05 1997 IST):

Sorry, Mr Antulay, had to work a bit. Do you believe Mr Kesri's strategy has paid off? If the Congress forms a coalition with the United Front, would you concede that Mr Kesri has been right after all? Does that redeem him in your eyes?

Ashish (Wed Apr 16 21:01:06 1997 IST):

Mr. Antulay, you have been known as a political opponent of Mr. Sharad Pawar. Yet, you come out with a statement justifying his claim for the Congress Presidentship. How do you justify this ?

sudhakar (Wed Apr 16 21:01:22 1997 IST):

But you did not really answer osteo-whatever's question after all.

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 21:02:40 1997 IST):

Manoj: My dear brother you should understand the spirit of the answer and not the form only. My answer is already contained in one of the earlier replies. What I mean is-- if you have not understood--- the people of India do not look to the name -- whether it is Atmaram Ramji Antulay or Abdul Rehman Antulay. Antulay being common. And this is not the first time I have said so. When I was fielded by Rajiv Gandhi as sole speaker on behalf of the Congress party on the motion of confidence moved by V P Singhji, if you care to read it, I had said precisely this: It was meant for the audience whom I addressed. Namely, the leaders and not the grassroot workers and people at large. So far as Balasaheb Thackery is concerned, you please show me one Shiv Sena shakha having been opened not only in rural Maharashtra but even in the city of Bombay during my tenure as CM, in addition to those which were existing before I took over. Don't you therefore my friend agree with me that persuasive politics is better than aggressive stance? You cannot win hearts by running down others. You can win the hearts of the people including Balasaheb Thackeray by trying to impress on his mind in all affection as to how detrimental an anti-Muslim stance is to the prosperity and unity of the nation. And during my chief ministership, there was not a single communal tension, let alone communal eruption and riots. So would you not therefore concur with what I say, that discretion is the better part of valour. And affection is always better than aggression.

L L James (Wed Apr 16 21:03:49 1997 IST):

Mr Antulay, I believe the Congress is finished. There is no hope for the party whom many of us believe to be totally discredited. How do you think this terminally ill party can be revived? You have boasted of your ability to breathe life in this moribund entity? Could we have your opinion on this score?

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 21:04:18 1997 IST):

ravi :with the permission of REDIFF and Mr Antulay : You return for yourself, not for any external reasons. You are not doing or getting any special favours. I returned, as you say it, on my own terms and because I wanted to. You don't want to retrun, don't Don't ask for favours. If you can try and improve things, return. Shall I give you one good reason? Because I earned enough in 7 years to keep my family fed for the rest of their lives and my children decently educated, the resat is for the country..if you can do so, come back otherwise for God's sdake stay there and enjoy, don't feel that you are owed anything by your country:you owe the country.Understand????

A R ANTULAY (Wed Apr 16 21:04:30 1997 IST):

EVERYONE: I really wish you a very happy time and I expect you also to wish me well because after all it is a mutual love and affection that should ultimately count. Thank you very much for a very noiseless and patient dialogue and debate. May god bless us all.

manoj (Wed Apr 16 21:04:41 1997 IST):

Can we think of Presidential system in the current scenario ???

JASWANT SRIKANTAN (Wed Apr 16 21:05:31 1997 IST):

Do you think the presence of a member of the Nehru family will help the Congress?

Ashish (Wed Apr 16 21:08:48 1997 IST):

It is nice enough to say that every politician is not a crook or a scum. But, I think that it is very fair to say that there are very few of those and even fewer in positions of power. Your comments ?

ravi (Wed Apr 16 21:10:04 1997 IST):

bpt mog!, I was only trying to gauge the reponse of Mr. antulay as to his views as to whats good in our country? I will return on my own terms, in fact I have already set the ball in motion and will return irrspective of anyones views. I am soory you misunderstood my question

bpt mog! (Wed Apr 16 21:11:54 1997 IST):

Next time he drives past the people of Delhi in his nice little a/c car let him see the love and affection of people from behind his dark tinted windows... kyaa bet kee yeh next time elect nahee hoyega???
