The Kersi Dubash Chat

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:40:17 1996 IST):

Ram Sinha: Well u have to be careful, basically only in Nairobi and I put all my clients at the Safari Park Hotel which is half an hour away from NAIROBI city and the hotel has an area of 60 acres.

Vaihayasi Daniel (Thu Oct 24 23:40:24 1996 IST):

Sakhi: Well there were plenty of Tibetan knick-knacks to shop around for. You can even buy the Ladakhi style robes called gonchas maybe for some future fancy dress ball. The monasteries and palaces makes exciting day trips. The veg food was great. There are one or two restaurants in Leh town that serve international cusine - hummus, pies etc and Tiger Tops serves some good veg grub. From the veggy p-of-v (I am veg too) the most interesting thing is the vegtables. The vegetables or so sweet and fresh that you can't compare them to anything you have eaten elsewhere; because they are so fresh and pesticide free. Ladakhis serve butter tea; which let me tell you is an acquired taste. There's great apricots and apricot juice around. Anything else you'd like to know?

Ram Sinha (Thu Oct 24 23:40:48 1996 IST):

Do myou compensate people for goods stolen?

jalori mog! (Thu Oct 24 23:40:54 1996 IST):

??

Sakhi (Thu Oct 24 23:41:12 1996 IST):

Kersi: What's the best time to visit Tiger Tops? Why?

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:41:39 1996 IST):

McCoy: Yes just let me know when you are ready to go and it will be my pleasure to arrange the most pleasureable trip for you and your family and friends.

no time to stand & stare (Thu Oct 24 23:41:48 1996 IST):

Mr Kersi, besides Nepal, is it possible to visit Tibet, especially Mt Kailas and Mansarovar, about which I have heard a lot?

Simran Singh (Thu Oct 24 23:41:50 1996 IST):

Sorry, my mate points out that the response was for Singh. not me. Are you not replying because you don't want to remember me?

Sakhi (Thu Oct 24 23:42:38 1996 IST):

Yes. What are the people like?

Violet Rao (Thu Oct 24 23:44:13 1996 IST):

I am just back from lunch, so please excuse my being late for this Chat. It must be pretty late back home. I have ten minutes to spare. This is not connected to the gorgeous Himalayas, but Tell me of a wonderful restaurant I can take my folks to when I come home to Bombay.

no time to stand & stare (Thu Oct 24 23:44:28 1996 IST):

:-(

Vaihayasi Daniel (Thu Oct 24 23:44:40 1996 IST):

Santanam: No Ladakh is not at all affected by the terrorism in Kashmir. But just make sure you don't route your journey to Ladakh through Kashmir.

Ram Sinha (Thu Oct 24 23:45:06 1996 IST):

Nice talking to you, Kersi. I shall certainly get back to you if I can get away from work in April or May.

Chandy (Thu Oct 24 23:45:08 1996 IST):

Mr. Kersi, I am interested in details about Kailash/Mansarovar. Is there someway I can get some. Like cost, effort, prep. details etc. Rather than spending time on this public forum, can u please let me know how can I get some more info. either from u or someone u can recommend. Also if u could give me a cost estimate please.

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:45:28 1996 IST):

Ram Sinha: Please Note Tiger Tops and Gaida have a reputation of having the most honest staff. You cannnot lock the room from the outside as when you are out on safaris or other jungle activites the house keeping staff enter and do up your rooms. I've had Indian clients who have forgotten their diamond jewellery at the lodge others have left behind American Express golden cards , and some have left expensive Peshmina shawls at Gaida lodge and they have been returned to the clients. We however tell our clients not to carry any expensive jewellery.

jalori mog! (Thu Oct 24 23:46:49 1996 IST):

Thanks Mr. Dubash...I've got some Tibetan friends who will be giving me feedback on this route, get in touch if you need any info on this new route into China..currently pack mules but I'm told bikes are getting across, cheers and good night..

Vaihayasi Daniel (Thu Oct 24 23:46:59 1996 IST):

Violet Rao: We suggest you check out the Where to eat section in our Bombay section of Travel.

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:48:35 1996 IST):

No Time to stand: Yeah you can visit Tibet from Nepal and u have to have atleast 5 working days to obtain a chinese visa to enter Tibet. Its approximately Rs 1 Lakh from Kathmandu for Indians and USD 4500 app . For a 15-17 day trip.

Vaihayasi Daniel (Thu Oct 24 23:48:47 1996 IST):

Sakhi: The people are really sweet. SO friendly and ready to greet you with the typical Ladakhi hell -- Julay, julay. They are very simple people and will not cheat you or take advantage of you in any way even though you are a tourist. A lot them attempt to practise their halting English or French with you.

Simran Singh (Thu Oct 24 23:49:57 1996 IST):

Have you been to China? Is it very difficult to get a visa for Tibet if you have an Indian passport?

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:50:07 1996 IST):

Santaman: So far Ladakh is not affected by any terrorists activities and is still a good place to visit.

Sher Khan (Thu Oct 24 23:50:41 1996 IST):

I must say this Daniel lad is much fasterrrrr at answerrrrrring questions than you arrrre.

jalori mog! (Thu Oct 24 23:50:58 1996 IST):

Violet Rao:The best one is Gokul behind Taj. You come back all the way from wherever to take your folks for a meal?

Vaihayasi Daniel (Thu Oct 24 23:51:01 1996 IST):

Violet: Check out WHere to Eat in our Bombay section of travel.

Sakhi (Thu Oct 24 23:51:07 1996 IST):

Thank you, Ms Daniel! You've been most helpful.

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:51:22 1996 IST):

Simran Singh: Its now relatively relaxed to get a Chinese visa from Kathmandu and now u can also pay in Indian rupees.

Simran Singh (Thu Oct 24 23:51:26 1996 IST):

I guess you have had a long day. You have been very informative. I do hope you will return too.

Simran Singh (Thu Oct 24 23:51:45 1996 IST):

How much does it cost?

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:52:55 1996 IST):

Simran: It costs app Rs 1 lakh.

Sakhi (Thu Oct 24 23:53:04 1996 IST):

Kersi: Would you rather be hands on at Tiger Tops rather than handling the show from Bombay?

S D Handel (Thu Oct 24 23:53:53 1996 IST):

Mogsaab, Gokul? No, if it is a family reunion, may I recommend Indian Summer near the Churchgate station, for Indian food, Lings Pavilion near the Regal cinema for Chinese food.

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:54:19 1996 IST):

Sakhi: I'm happy handling it from Bombay as I can never stay in a remote place without the normal pleasures like a/c, light etc.

Sakhi (Thu Oct 24 23:55:05 1996 IST):

So you're more the armchair traveller than the rough-it-out types?

jalori mog! (Thu Oct 24 23:55:41 1996 IST):

?

KERSI DUBASH (Thu Oct 24 23:57:43 1996 IST):

Sakhi: Yeah certianly, I love my Business class travel on international airline and even though I have been working closely with the TT group of companies for the last 15 years I have only arranged treks for my clients but have never been on one so far.

Simran Singh (Thu Oct 24 23:58:22 1996 IST):

God bless, Kersi. Be Good!

jalori mog! (Thu Oct 24 23:59:24 1996 IST):
