The K R Malkani Chat

K R MALKANI (Fri Apr 4 21:23:05 1997 IST):

sadak mog: It is fashionable now a days to run down politics and politicians. The fact is that in a democracy there have got to be the parties and there have got to be politicians. It is only under a government by kings and queens that you can do without politicians and make do with courtiers. There is no doubt there is corruption in politics in the economy and I am sorry to say at times even in the judiciary. But we cannot throw out the baby with the bathtub. Don't forget that politicians are the link between the people numbering in India something like 100 crores and the government. They are the lifeline of Indian democracy.

ravi (Fri Apr 4 21:23:28 1997 IST):

I am curious to know , when the BJP was in power for those 13 days there was so much rumbling over allocation of portfolios knowing fully well the writing was on the wall Your comments

jayant (Fri Apr 4 21:24:12 1997 IST):

Mr Malkani what is the fate of Shankar singh Vaghela if he loses this election

sadak mog! (Fri Apr 4 21:24:12 1997 IST):

BJP has Sushma Swaraj! She will take over everything just like she has taken over byforce the management of a banquet hall within an Arya Samaj temple in GK-II and turn it into India's first MNC shaadi mandap....maybe all politicians shud be sent off the planet????

shail (Fri Apr 4 21:24:50 1997 IST):

Malkaniji, Congress has done it Three times! Can we say that BJP will not do it third time? -- First landing the support and then withdrawing it in the middle...

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:24:55 1997 IST):

Mr. Malkani, BJP (with RSS) is the single most stable political organization in the country. This is the only organization that matters in todays India. Please do not screw it up by compromosing and playing games of political convenience and degenratet into another Congress or JP or SP or.....

K R MALKANI (Fri Apr 4 21:25:02 1997 IST):

Everyone: THANK YOU VERY MUCH FRIENDS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PERCEPTIVE AND PENETRATING QUESTIONS. I HOPE THAT MY ANSWERS SATISFIED YOUR CURIOSITY ABOUT THE INDIAN POLITICAL SCENE. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN, GOOD NIGHT, SHUBHRATRI...

jayant (Fri Apr 4 21:27:04 1997 IST):

Do you think BJP is thinking about a UP kind of solution at Centre

VenkatNY (Fri Apr 4 21:27:13 1997 IST):

I agree with you Malkaniji that it has become fashionable to run down politicians these days, but 80 % of the educated people in India do not vote. They have no right to criticise the govt. Every citizen has to perform his duties. Most of the educated people in the cities follow the "Not in my backyard" philosophy.

sadak mog! (Fri Apr 4 21:30:16 1997 IST):

Sir:politicians are no longer the link between people and the State. Please walk down Lutyens Delhi as a 'common man', you will be arrested if you even peer at a nameplate of a politician's house...if the Delhi Police has not shot you down. Fashion is a correct word, it reflects the common man's perception...as far as alternatives are concerned, about 1/3rd of the country by geographical area is already being run for us by the armed forces and para military, and quite well, too...so there isthe alternative, howsoever bitter the pill. Go back to your ideology Mr Malkani, see whether it feeds you or keeps your 500 odd MPs in fine food and raiment...do our viewers know that the major question now hitting the MPs of this country is : who will go to play cricket in the MPs matches......?while they play gulli danda in Parliamnet....

ravi (Fri Apr 4 21:30:25 1997 IST):

Mr. Malkani, For all The UF faults, some talent for governing does exists case in point Chidambaram, Gujral who actaully understand the workings of their ministries with their backgrounds Does the BJP have that kind of talent ? Some examples please in different areas ..

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:31:12 1997 IST):

Sadak Mog: Throwing politicians away to Andamans.... Hey thats not too bad. But Come on pal! why do u want to inflict that much on fellow Indians on the islands. Kisangani would be more appropriate. or maybe in downtown Chicago with a couple of greenbacks stuck on their backs.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:32:24 1997 IST):

Malkani ji, would states be reorganized once BJP comes to power? And if yes, on what basis?

ravi (Fri Apr 4 21:35:05 1997 IST):

sadak mog! (Fri Apr 4 21:35:08 1997 IST):

can somebody spot the difference between BJP/Cong/ JD/TDP/Punch&Judy/IS Johar/etcetc....?

Ra (Fri Apr 4 21:35:32 1997 IST):

Mr. Malkani, Your party's stand on'Swadeshi' and against MNC's appears to be for the benefit of the Industrialists who 1)made obscene profits under aprotected environment denying the consumer quality and affordability 2) who seldom encouraged innovation (they always want to import technology while the country's brains benefit others) 3. whose ideas of 'good management' is to 'manage' /'get things done' at Government offices, i.e. spike the competition and manipulate duties, there having a vested interest in a corruptible polity. BJP has not explained how the Swadeshi policy benefits the common man, the consumer whose interest should be its first priority. After all, Capitalism is respectable to the common man only if it benefits him through competition.

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:35:39 1997 IST):

Incisive Mog!! I wish I had the facts as well. Mr. Malkani has now gone hi-tech and has an email address on his business card. Guess who is providing him the net servise. BT-MCI! Hows that for Swadeshi

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:36:07 1997 IST):

Malkani ji, would states be reorganized once BJP comes to power? And if yes, on what basis?

sadak mog! (Fri Apr 4 21:38:58 1997 IST):

Chicago downtown? Windy City..maan..dey one big motha gonna ramalamadingdong him mama...

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:41:09 1997 IST):

Dear Ra (whatever your name is), Swadeshi does not mean license-and-permit- socialist Raj a la Nehruvian idiotic policies and Indira's stupidity. You fellows have been putting these idiots in power for the last 50 years. It is time you recant.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:43:35 1997 IST):

Swadeshi means total INTERNAL liberalization and then MODERNIZATION. Actually, you fellows are slaves of the white race, that's why you want "globalization". You see you don't want India to modernize, you want it to westernize. That's why the mania for globalization.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:45:28 1997 IST):

In fact, the best practitioners of Swadeshi are Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore. If you have to model the economy, why not after these countries which have been astounding success stories.

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:46:13 1997 IST):

Cheers! Mog got to go now. maybe i can talk to u later... someday. it would be nice if I could. ciao....

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:47:54 1997 IST):

I see a lot of NRIs advocate "globalization", as opposed to internal liberalization and modernization. U know why? It is not because of love for mother India, but rather it their love for their own pockets. I will explain how.

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:47:56 1997 IST):

Hey Rajiv! Cut that swadeshi crap out. it cannot work.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:50:41 1997 IST):

NRIs/foreigners of Indian descent have lot of money. ok. Now if the GOI's emphasis is on internal liberalization and internal modernization, then naturally these "foreigners" do not get much benefit. That's why you see all the rants and raves against Swadeshi.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:52:33 1997 IST):

Sandeep, first refute my arguments. Otherwise I would assume that you are like that half-filled pot, who makes alot of noise. "Adh jal gagri chhalkat jai, bhai gagriya chuppe jay"

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:54:09 1997 IST):

Hey Rediff Guys, is Malkani ji still there? Yes ___ No ___

Sandeep (Fri Apr 4 21:54:25 1997 IST):

rajiv, swadeshi means living w/o internet, living with coal powered electricity, living with ambassadors and PALs, living with unpotable water..... i definitely dont want to live in such an India

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 21:56:45 1997 IST):

Ra (Fri Apr 4 22:00:00 1997 IST):

Dear Ra.. Japan, Taiwan and Korea have been astounding stories because they produced globally competitive stuff. They worked hard at improving what they borrowed. Did Nehru stop our industrialists from doing that ? The fact is that our industrialists benefited from the license Raj, now they don't know how to handle competition. Bringing down the barriers is the only way to force them. otherwise they would use the fat, undeserved profits to manipulate politicians and the bureucracy and retain the status quo. We are also a little different from Japan or Korea. We have this wonderful caste system. The Brahmins and the Banias look down their noses at each other instead co-operating to produce good stuff.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 22:00:31 1997 IST):

No Sandeep, Swadeshi means a Bharatiya IBM, and a Bharatiya Microsoft and a Bharatiya Toyota Motor Company. I find this argument funny, that Swadeshi means bullock carts, and "phoren" means Jumbo Jets. It is like saying shaking your fat butt in a disco a sign of modernity and bharatnatyam is backward. Grow up fella, you are a slave of that god-forsaken Queen in Windsor Palace.

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 22:06:52 1997 IST):

I will give you an example how this "globalization" bizness is looting Mother India. An article in Journal of Finance was published. It compared the rates at which Indian buyers are charged for certain commodities (in Rupees) than buyers around the world. Ok? For one particular item the invoices were charged 20 times than the other buyers. Now tell me what is the exchange rate between Rupee and Dollar. Rs. 35/dollar right. So if a buyer in Singapore is charged $10/unit of a certain commodity, then why is the Indian buyer charged $200 per unit. Isn't it loss of national income ???

Rajiv Varma (Fri Apr 4 22:11:13 1997 IST):

Can someone tell me if Malkani ji is still there. If not I will have to leave. I have no interest whatsoever in arguing with these mental slaves of British Royalty and their other White Masters in the U.S.
