The Medha Patkar Chat

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:05:42 1996 IST):

Rishi: Yes, we are very aware of that. When we talk of revival of communities, we do not ignore the struggle that would go in against social and economic inequalities within. The Alliance of Movements of Dalits, women, tribals, farmers and labourers who have a common alternative development vision are bringing together the analysis and strategies to fight these inequalities too. The urban activists are citizens with a right to speak and fight for the rural poor and most of them have left their homes and careers to be a part of rural society and the battle. I'm proud of them.

aAron Sharpe! (Tue Oct 15 22:07:00 1996 IST):

Don't you think India and its people to move into the future? Why must you impose your model of development on them? And how do you know it is the right way?

!!MOG!! (Tue Oct 15 22:07:00 1996 IST):

Medha:Even poor old Sukh Ram won a defamation case about receiving bribes and look where he is now. The legal courts are not where matters lie. Maybe *ANDOLAN* does not receive foreign funds. I'm, asking you a direct question : DIDN'T YOU ACCEpt FOREIGN FUNDS> (Nothing wrong in accepting foreign funds, in my opinion, but i'm just asking you...and you means not just medha/andolan but anyone connected who cud pass it on....)

Indu (Tue Oct 15 22:07:17 1996 IST):

Is speak all these city-bred are going to do for the rurals?

Damn right! (Tue Oct 15 22:07:24 1996 IST):

how many Greens does it take to change a light bulb and get out of the black??

Bikash Sanyal (Tue Oct 15 22:07:56 1996 IST):

What bothers me is the way of speaking. Why it it that all our people's leaders soon behave like the established doyens of the body politic, talking down to us.

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:08:38 1996 IST):

S Jaswant: All the political parties have joined the unipolar politics supporting liberalisation-globalisation based economic policy. But their plans and "gains" are getting more and more exposed to the common people who have to face the impacts and losses. We have hope in and strive for broader people's politics which is non-electoral.

ARI (Tue Oct 15 22:09:14 1996 IST):

Ms.Patkar>>why exactly are you against MNCs, even if they are not directly related to environment pollution?

na (Tue Oct 15 22:09:17 1996 IST):

Medha, I'm logging off now. Warm regards to everyone at NAPM. I'll be in touch. nikhil aziz Lakshmanji, Thanks for this great opportunity. I'll try to log in when Farooq Abdullah comes in.

!!MOG!! (Tue Oct 15 22:09:27 1996 IST):

feet of clay?

ARI (Tue Oct 15 22:11:17 1996 IST):

Ms.Patkar>>do you support the agitation against KFC in Bangalore?

Indu (Tue Oct 15 22:11:57 1996 IST):

How long before you are also on the political band-wagon? And when that happens, will all these wonderful ideas for rural upliftment end up in the trash bin? This is exactly how our 'venerable' politicians have started

!!MOG!! (Tue Oct 15 22:12:45 1996 IST):

? feet of clay?

Damn right! (Tue Oct 15 22:14:29 1996 IST):

good night, guys! last one out just turn off the lights.

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:14:30 1996 IST):

Pieush: Multinationals cannot enhance the development process according to us. Because, for us, development means fulfillment of basic needs and availability of opportunities to fullest development of an individual's potential in the context of common good. They cannot even ensure source of livelihood to the millions of Indians but would certainly loot us through their profit-oriented approach in which they would shamelessly change our drinking and eating habits, our cultures and capture the markets as well as our decision making processes. They have proved this all over the world. They are the giant enterprises that would devour our natural resources with even distorted technological choice and leave our population deprived and destitutionalised. We do not want their quality products. We want quality of life that would come from equality, simplicity and self-reliance.

sh (Tue Oct 15 22:16:04 1996 IST):

what's happening?

ARI (Tue Oct 15 22:16:26 1996 IST):

Ms.Patkar>>I wish to know your stand on the MNCs .....why do you oppose them?

!!MOG!! (Tue Oct 15 22:16:31 1996 IST):

Medha:waiting, your ex-friends are waiting to ask you some questions..or does that make them 'hostile' or 'rude'... oror shud i close this link since basically these people say they did respect what you USED to stand for but now they feel USED instead...

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:17:10 1996 IST):

R Jairam: Oh, you can do a lot! If you can give more time - days, months, years - come over and we will decide the area of work and the region where you can do your best. Otherwise, we have and we need more and more people to write on the issues, collect funds and in kind resources for the Movement, join our letter campaigns and various protest actions in the critical situations and also to spread messages and widen our support base.

sateesh (Tue Oct 15 22:17:30 1996 IST):

Medha I want to ask a straight question. Why do you file a law suit against anybody?. Are you afraid that their propaganda will expose you?.In what way are you different from the dirty political leaders who file law suits on poor dailies for every thing. What do you get out of a law suit?.More publicity...But you just denied that you are publicity hungry..What do you get out of a law suit Medha?.What do you get?. Firstly you are doing something very wrong which most of indian intellectuals disagree with.Secondly you want to take things to court.WHY...WHY...WHY?.

Vishy (Tue Oct 15 22:18:31 1996 IST):

Hello!!!!

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:18:57 1996 IST):

Mog: I have not, categorically!

!!MOG!! (Tue Oct 15 22:20:19 1996 IST):

Medha:I quote from company present "SAME OLD MEDHA." GOODBYE. Have a happy life, just don't try to thrust it on everybody else. People have their own minds, too. Bye doc. jairam, if you detect dementia over internet your patients had better find another doctor, don't you think????

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:20:52 1996 IST):

ARI: Yes, I do! Whether or not, it has or will be successful in the immediate issue context.

ARI (Tue Oct 15 22:23:28 1996 IST):

Ms.Patkar>>hasn't the slogan of "self reliance" becoma outdated? It is now futile to still stick to the notion that we can develop as an island! WE need the western countries, they don't need us! It is to our benefit that we trade and do business with them. The SE Asian countries have left us in their wake.......we missed the bus once......for GOD's sake, don't make us miss it again, Ms. Patkar!!

MEDHA PATKAR, (Tue Oct 15 22:26:00 1996 IST):

I must say thank you to all those who have shown frankness in asking questions, although I wish we would be face to face and with enough time for me to convince you or get convinced myself. I hope to continue the dialogue in whichever forum and through whichever medium you would choose. Good-bye!

Indu (Tue Oct 15 22:26:01 1996 IST):

Ms.Patkar>>I admit to having an urban bias, but a lot of people like me, though silently admire you and your cause of helping exploited people, I, like many am against your policies on liberalisation/globalisation....

siva (Tue Oct 15 22:31:43 1996 IST):
