Cabletron makes India connection

Cabletron Systems, a US-based supplier of network systems and services, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangalore-based Network Solutions Limited to implement network management systems in the Asia-Pacific region.

Under the agreement, Network Solutions will provide offshore and onsite installation training and customised software solutions for Cabletron's Spectrum, a network management platform.

"Network Solutions will invest Rs 7.5 million to stock products, components and to train its people. Cabletron will maintain spares inventory worth $500,000 in Bangalore," Sudhir D Sarma, managing director of Network Solutions, told reporters.

Both companies have been working together for four years now with Network Solutions functioning as a reseller for Cabletron's products.

"We are pleased to strengthen our relationship with Network Solutions,'' Kin S Lai, managing director, Cabletron, Asia- Pacific said. "Our previous association with it has shown the company as the leader in the field, capable of providing the high-quality solutions required by our customers in the Asia-Pacific region."

"This agreement will help us widen our base in the region. Having developed competence in networking we are now ready to move into the field of providing software solutions to our customers," says Sarma.

In addition, Cabletron has appointed Network Solutions, its third-party maintenance provider for India.

LANcare is Cabletron's service and support programme that ensures round-the-clock service and support to Cabletron's customers on the sub-continent.

"As our third-party maintenance service provider, Network Solutions will have to maintain a minimum standard that we have delineated," Lai said.

The $1.4-billion Cabletron Systems provides high-performance intranet and Internet solutions, including LAN and WAN switches, remote access products and advanced network and systems management software. Network Solutions reported sales of Rs 100 million in fiscal 1996-97. For the current year, the company has projected sales of Rs 150 million . Network employs 125 professionals.
