Remarkable achievements: Launched into Test cricket in 1996 in spectacular style with a century on debut at Lord's (131). He scored a second hundred (136) in the next Test at Birmingham His 183 vs SL at the 1999 World Cup is the highest score by an Indian in the World Cup. Has 8 scores of over 130 in One-day internationals. His 44-plus average places him among the top ten all-time batsman in ODIs Together with Sachin Tendulkar forms the most durable one-day opening pair of all time, having opened for India in 103 one-day internationals.

Remarkable achievements: Voted the most valuable player of the 1996 World Cup. Set the trend of quick-fire opening partnerships along with wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana Holds the record of scoring the fastest 50 (in 17 balls) in ODI. Along with Mike Gatting, Holds the record of hitting the maximum sixes (4) in an over. He hit 4 sixes of Aamer Sohail (Pak) at Singapore in 1996. Became the first Sri Lankan to score a triple century in Tests when he scored 340 against India at Colombo in August, 1997.
