Former Australia cricket captain Allan Border will commence a 1000-km trek from Sydney to Brisbane on October 8 to raise funds for sick and needy children in Australia.

He is following in the steps of former English cricketer Ian Botham, who had raised over 11 million dollars in the United Kingdom for similar causes through sponsored walks.

Leaving Sydney early on Tuesday, October 8, Border is expected to cover a staggering 50 km a day in order to reach his destination, Brisbane, by Thursday, November 7, where the walk will finish at The Gabba during a break in play in the first Ashes Test between Australia and England. He will be joined along the way by his wife and a host of other sporting celebrities, including former Australian Test and one-day stars Dean Jones and Ian Healy, rugby league and rugby union greats David Campese, Mal Meninga, Phil Kearns, John Eales, Nick Farr-Jones, world surfing champion Layne Beachley and 1990 US PGA golf champion Wayne Grady.

One of Australia's greatest cricketers and former 'Australian of the Year', Border's unique venture is aimed at raising much-needed funds for ill, terminally ill and troubled kids.
