Interestingly enough Gillespie is the first player with Aboriginal heritage to play Test cricket.

He has traced his father's family back to the Kamilaroi people, worked with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and conducted coaching clinics in Darwin and the Tiwi Islands.
