Gibbs and Smith became the first opening pair in Test history to add 300 runs twice as they put on a huge partnership of 338.

South Africa closed Day 1 on 398 for one wicket. Gibbs was out on 179, caught at deep midwicket off Michael Vaughan's bowling.
