Dhawan confirmed as Man of Tournament

March 04, 2004 16:42 IST

The ICC under-19 World Cup's top-scoring batsmen Shikhar Dhawan is also the event's Man of the Tournament.

Dhawan is the clear winner of the honour with 11 points comprising three Man of the Match awards and one second place.

He earned his Man of the Match awards for three centuries against Scotland, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The Delhi left-hander's total tournament record was 505 runs in seven matches at 84.16 with a strike rate of 93.51.

Dhawan finished the tournament three points ahead of the chasing pack. There were five players tied for second place -Riaz Afridi and Khalid Latif from Pakistan, Farveez Maharoof and Chamith Kulasekara from Sri Lanka and Alistair Cook from England.

Interestingly Latif, Maharoof and Cook all captained their sides in Bangladesh.

One point behind this quintet were the top-scoring individuals from ICC Associate Member countries. Ireland's Eoin Morgan and Nepal's Shakti Gauchan both picked up seven points - performances that bode well for the future of the sport in their countries.

The other player on seven points was Pakistan leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad making Pakistan the most dominant side in the standings.

Despite playing in tomorrow's final, Afridi, Latif and Amjad have no opportunity to improve their total as the cut-off point for the Man of the Tournament standings is the semi-finals.

Dhawan has already flown back to India after his side's elimination in the semi-finals. His prize is a six and a half inch silver replica of the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2004 trophy.

It is inscribed with the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2004 logo and the wording 'Man of the Tournament'. It was produced by the Crown Jeweller Asprey and is valued at over £2500.
