Nehra to miss second ODI

Faisal Shariff in Rawalpindi | March 15, 2004 16:55 IST

Left-arm fast bowler Ashish Nehra has injured his left ankle and been ruled out of Tuesday's second Limited Overs International against Pakistan at Rawalpindi. Young left-arm fast-medium bowler Irfan Pathan is likely to replace him.

Nehra had bowled the crucial final over in the first LOI at Karachi on Saturday, preventing the batsmen from getting the nine runs needed for victory.

Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, who was disappointing in the first match even though he picked up the crucial wickets of Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, is likely to be dropped. In his place Mumbai off-spinner and hard-hitting lower-order batsman Ramesh Powar may make his international debut.

Kartik, who had a none too impressive tour of Australia, struggled in the first match, conceding 74 runs in 10 overs.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly, who is down with mild fever, did not attend the nets today. His condition will be reviewed tomorrow morning and a final decision made on whether he will play the day-night game.

The injury to V V S Laxman's right knee will be reviewed during today's practice session and a decision made on his fitness thereafter.
