Rajneesh Gupta | November 04, 2004 16:02 IST

Harbahajan Singh on Thursday opened the bowling with Zaheer Khan. This provided the rare instance of a spinner opening the bowling for India.

Scorecard | Day 1 highlights

A regular scene in Indian cricket in the seventies, this has not happened atleast for quite some time. In fact the last time a spinner opened for India was Anil Kumble against South Africa at Bangalore in 1999-00.

The following table lists the instances of a spinner/non-regular bowler opening the bowling for India in a Test since Kapil Dev's made his debut in 1978.

Sub: Melbourne Test, 1981

In the 1981 Melbourne test, the bowling in Australia's 2nd innings was actually opened by Karsan Ghavri (who got Dyson and Chappell in successive balls) ...

Sub: Spinners opening bowling for India

I think Souray Ganguly, Mohinder Amaranath and Sunil Gavaskar are medium pace bowlers.
