Emotional to get back into the team bus, says Gavaskar

October 05, 2004 22:25 IST

It was an emotional comeback for former India captain Sunil Gavaskar as he began interaction with the team management after being appointed consultant on Tuesday.

"It's emotional to get back into the Indian team bus after you've put off your bats and pads," the little master said.

"It's exciting to see all younger and eager faces," he added.

Admitting the job will not be easy, having taken up the job on the eve of the first Test against Australia, which begins in Bangalore on Wednesday, Gavaskar said he followed the Indian team's performance in recent one-day engagements.

Speaking about his new role, Gavaskar said it "evolves".

"Improvements that the team needs to work on would be discussed.

"I have ideas for the team, but first I will discuss them with the team management."

On the keenly-awaited four-Test series, Gavaskar said the Aussies lost a "massive amount of experience" following the retirement of Steve Waugh and the injury to Ricky Ponting.

He also said he does not believe that Sachin Tendulkar's tennis elbow injury is due to the use of a heavy bat.

"Sometimes, when you play a long innings and you are keen to do well, you tend to grip the bat harder, resulting in strain."
