AP HC issues notices to BCCI, Sachin, Sourav

Syed Amin Jafri | October 08, 2004 10:49 IST

The Andhra Pradesh high court has issued notices to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and Sony Entertainment Television for telecasting a Pepsi advertisement that allegedly depicts child labour.

Justices B Sudershan Reddy and K C Bhanu on Thursday ordered notice to the Union of India to file a detailed report regarding the advertisement depicting child labour.

Notices have also been served on Pepsi and the Advertising Standards Council of India.

The judges were dealing with a writ petition filed by social worker Uma Mamidipudi, who pointed out that in the Pepsi advertisement telecast on Sony, a child labourer is shown carrying the soft drink to the Indian cricket team.

In the ad, Ganguly asks the boy 'Aur ek milenga kya?'

The petitioner alleges that the advertisement encourages, glorifies and justifies child labour, which is prohibited by the law.

Contending that the advertisement violated Articles 21, 24 and 45 of the Constitution, she sought direct directions to the Union of India not to allow its telecast.

The judges posted the matter to the first week of November.
