Former president of the Board of Control of Cricket in India Raj Singh Dungarpur said on Thursday that time has come for Sourav Ganguly [Images] to make way for Rahul Dravid [Images] as the captain of the Indian team.

"I would be amazed if Dravid is not made the captain of the Indian side now. I, for one, would want that he should be named captain for the entire forthcoming one-day series with Sri Lanka [Images] and not just lead the team for one or two matches," Dungarpur told rediff.com on phone.

Selectors face captaincy issue

According to Dungarpur, one section of the Board wants Ganguly to be retained as the captain because a certain Board official who lives in Kolkata would need police protection to save his life in case there is a change in the captaincy.

"Obviously Jagmohan Dalmiya does not want this to happen as he fears for his life," Dungarpur said.

He also claimed that the Indian selectors have now decided to go in for change.

"If they do not do now there would be unrest in the country," he added.

However, a senior Board official said that Dravid has a dismal record as captain of the Indian team.

"If he had won the series in Sri Lanka, the whole debate would have been over but he could not," said a top Board official.

Meanwhile, BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra who has returned from Melbourne, said he will not take part in the selection committee meeting.

"I have no plans to go to Chandigarh for the selection of the captain or the Indian team. S K Nair [BCCI secretary] will be there to take care of things," Mahendra said.
