Vajpayee knew of telecom scam, charges Surjeet

Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet today claimed that Prime Minister A B Vajapyee was definitely in the know of things in the Rs 500 billion telecom scam.

Addressing a press conference in the midst of his election campaign, he said he had himself gone through the various papers connected with the telecom scam and was convinced that Vajpayee was personally aware of what was happening in the matter.

However, he parried a question on whether he thought the prime minister was personally involved in corruption in the telecom scam.

The Supreme Court and the Election Commission had restrained the government from going ahead with the telecom deal since it involved a new policy, he pointed out.

Answering a question, Surjeet said he did not foresee any hitch in forming a non-BJP government at the Centre after the elections. There would also be no problem in identifying the leader to head it, he added. Who thought the United Front would form a government after the 1996 elections, he said.
