Email this report to a friend

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet today withdrew the concession in sales tax given to Pepsi, Coca-Cola and other soft drink companies.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting in Lucknow chaired by Chief Minister Kalyan Singh today.

An official spokesman said as per the decisions, any company setting up a soft drink plant in Uttar Pradesh would have to pay 15 per cent sales tax. He said Pepsi and Coca-Cola had given assurances of providing jobs to 2,000 people which they did not fulfil.

The spokesman said the withdrawal of sales tax concession would fetch the government a revenue of about Rs 5 billion.

He said in another decision, the cabinet has increased reservation of ex-armymen in public services from the existing two per cent to five per cent.
