Equities suffer moderate loss due to selling pressure; Nifty down 7 points to 970.75

Share prices, after opening on a positive note, drifted lower on selling pressure and suffered moderate losses on the National stock exchange (nse) today.

Mirroring the subdued trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index, opened higher at 979.80 points eased later and closed at 970.75 points, lower by 7.45 points from 978.20 of the previous day.

CNX Nifty Junior index slid by 18.25 points to 1790.75 points from 1809 while the S&P CNX Defty droped by 5.50 point to 986.70 points.

The S&P CNX 500 moved down by 4.35 points to 676.25 points and CNX Midcap 200 declined by 11.05 points to 598.84 points from 609.89 points. The total turnover, involving 49.40 million shares, in 207,979 trades stood at Rs 13.10 billion and the debentures traded were valued at Rs 5.83 million.

About 261 securities gained, 630 declined, 74 remained unchanged while 53 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: Gujarat Ambuja Cement which shot up by eight per cent to Rs 297 (275), Bajaj Auto 7.93 per cent to Rs 553.65 (512.95), ICICI 6.52 per cent to Rs 49.80 (46.75), Tisco 4.92 per cent to Rs 92.80 (88.45) and L&T 4.08 per cent to Rs 204 (196).

Top losers were: Cochin Refineries which declined by 5.76 per cent to Rs 130.80 (138.80), Telco to Rs 135 (143.05), Tata Chemicals Rs 57.60 (60.60), Glaxo Rs 645 (677) and Great Eastern Shipping Rs 19.25 (20).
