Jogi urges Centre to solve Balco imbroglio; says state has no role

In a fresh hope to break the ice between unions and the new management of Balco, the Chhattisgarh government has asked the Centre to make efforts to bring the warring factions to the meeting table, saying it (the state) has no role to play in resolving the impasse.

"Balco is under the charge of mining ministry of the Union government. Therefore, you can consider playing a formal role in resolving the problem," state Chief Minister Ajit Jogi said in a letter to the Union Mines Minister Sunderlal Patwa on Thursday.

This is the second communication between Jogi and Patwa since April 3, when the chief minister had written that his government had made every possible effort, as per law, to resolve the problem and now "the onus for finding a solution is with the centre".

Jogi was replying to Patwa's letter earlier in the day. Patwa had extended all help to facilitate a solution to the vexed issue "keeping the ground realities in mind."

Patwa, however, said that the solution could be found only if the new management, the workers and the state government sit across the table. He assured that the Centre would make all possible efforts to bring them together.

"At present there appears to be a deadlock. One cannot say that Jogi's letter brings forth any breakthrough, " Patwa said.

Whatever be the solution, the workers' interest had to be kept uppermost though it was the new management which would decide their demands, he added.
