'No information on Huawei involvement'

Karnataka Home Minister M Mallikarjuna Kharge on Tuesday said the state had no intelligence information about China headquartered Huawei Technologies being reportedly involved in developing telecom surveillance equipment for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Kharge told reporters even the IB had not sounded the state on the matter.

Huawei, which has a software development centre in Karnataka dismissed as "totally untrue and baseless" reports that it might have helped the Taliban upgrade their telecommunication network.

Reiterating the state's displeasure over the Centre for delaying approval to the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act, Kharge termed the act 'mild' compared to POTO being brought in by the Centre.

Kharge lamented that though Karnataka sent its act for presidential assent much earlier, an act passed by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh recently has secured the nod.

It was unfortunate that discussions have been going on KOCA in various quarters, without studying the merits and demerits of the Act, which was yet to come into force, he said.
