ONGC, RIL most profitable

Oil Natural Gas Corporation of India has emerged as the top profit-earner in 2001. The company posted a net profit of Rs 31.43 billion during the six months ended September 2001, up 24.1 per cent compared with the same period during the previous fiscal.

Reliance Industries stood second, while Indian Oil Corporation took the third slot. While the net profit of Reliance rose by 9.7 per cent to Rs 13.20 billion, Indian Oil's net profit slipped by 31 per cent to Rs 10.19 billion.

Reliance Petroleum captured the fourth position with a net profit of Rs 8.67 billion up 24 per cent, beating the state-run telecom majors MTNL (net profit dipped 7 per cent to Rs 7.60 billion) and VSNL (net profit slipped by 1 per cent to Rs 7.22 billion).

ITC scored over the two public sector majors Gas Authority of India and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

With the seventh rank, the cigarette major posted a 23 per cent growth in the net profit to Rs 6.16 billion. While GAIL's net was Rs 5.44 billion, BPCL posted Rs 4.05 billion.

Wipro was the only software company which found place in the top 10 profit-earners. The software major's net rose 61 per cent to Rs 4.23 billion.
