Kandla port to resume operations in 3-4 daysIndia's busiest port of Kandla in earthquake-hit Gujarat is expected to start dry cargo operations in the next three or four days, its chairman said on Wednesday. "As far as dry cargo is concerned, we will be able to start (operations) in three-four days," A K Joti, chairman of Kandla Port Trust said by telephone from Kandla. "As far as oil jetty is concerned, it will take some one week time as we have to check up all the pipelines," he said. Joti said cargo jetties number one to five were damaged. "There are cracks but we have to see, to what extent." The problem in jetty numbers 6 to 10 was not that acute, he said. "We will be able to restore services there in next three-four days. Loading/unloading will start." he said. He said labourers were expected to start coming back to work at the port in the next two-three days. "Once electricity is restored by the Gujarat Electricity Board, then I think a lot of people will start coming back," he said. Joti said the electricity board was making efforts and indications were that it could be restored on Thursday. In the absence of electricity, water supplies were also hit, he said.
