Govt criticised for moving SC on Balco

The government on Thursday came in for a sharp attack from Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha for moving the Supreme Court on Aluminium company Balco with senior Congress member Arjun Singh terming it as a 'disgrace' and saying Vajpayee government did not deserve to be in power.

Heated exchanges were witnessed between the ruling and Opposition members over the issue during the zero hour as Singh criticised the government for going to the court on a 'false premise' to seek protection of workers and management in the strike-hit plant in Korba.

Minister of State for Divestment Arun Shourie defended the government action saying it was necessitated because of the statements of certain Chhattisgarh leaders giving moral support to striking workers and threat to stop water, electricity and food supply to the plant.

When Opposition protested the minister's naming of those state leaders, chairman Krishan Kant directed Shourie not to refer to the state government as rules demanded he should first give notice before naming them.
