Mamata asks PM to review Balco deal

Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to review the controversial Balco deal saying she was 'shocked and surprised' that the controlling shares of the company had been given to a single private party.

She said that she found it 'strange' that while the Orissa-based Nalco was allowed to restructure its capital, the same facility was not extended to Balco and, added, "this surely requires investigation to protect national interest and to expose vested interests''.

Stating that Balco is the only company producing special aluminium alloy to meet critical requirement of defence for Prithvi and Agni Missiles and for production of other space accessories, Banerjee said handing over the organisation to a private party means ''exposing ourselves to the possibility of know-how drainage.
