BJP meet delays Kelkar report

BS Political Bureau in New Delhi | December 23, 2002 12:27 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party's national executive will hold an exclusive session to discuss the recommendations of the Rajnath Singh Committee, set up to analyse the recommendations of the Kelkar Committee on taxes from the party's view-point.

The two-day national executive meeting, from tomorrow, will discuss other national issues.

The report, submitted to BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu by Rajnath Singh on Saturday, is believed to have expressed strong objection to several of the Kelkar Committee's recommendations.

According to sources, the committee, however, has made strong recommendations for the enhancement of the Income-Tax exemption limit to Rs 100,000 and has turned down any suggestion to withdraw the Income-Tax exemptions on housing loans.

Similarly, the BJP committee has strongly objected to Kelkar Committee's suggestion of introducing Income-Tax on agriculture income.

A senior member of the committee said though the Rajnath Singh Committee differed on several points with the Kelkar report, there were not much objections on the recommendations for direct taxes.

Members of the Rajnath Singh Committee felt that it would be politically harmful to accept the Kelkar Committee's recommendations in toto.

The first day of the national executive is expected to chart out party's political strategy in view of the party's thumping victory in Gujarat.
