WTO begins review of India's trade policy

World Trade Organisation officials on Tuesday had a preparatory meeting with senior government officials for reviewing India's trade policy.

The review, which is done every four years, is due in June this year. The last review was conducted in 1998.

Official sources said that a three-member WTO delegation headed by Clemens Boonekamp, director of trade policy review committee, deliberated on their draft report prepared for the purpose.

The delegation also met the Reserve Bank of India and Securities and exchange Board of India officials in Mumbai in this connection.

The WTO has recently completed the similar review of Pakistan.

Under the review exercise, two reports would be prepared -- one by the WTO secretariat and the other a policy statement by the Indian government.

The review is conducted every two years for QUAD countries comprising USA, Canada, Japan and EU.

India falls in the next category in which there are 16 countries.

Pakistan falls in the third category for which review is conducted once in six years.
