Govt not to intervene in cell tariff row: Mahajan

Communications and Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan ruled out the possibility of the government intervening in the mobile tariff controversy following the reduction of mobile phone charges by Bharat Sanchar Nigam.

BSNL has got the clearance from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and "I cannot ask BSNL to get the clearance of its tariff by its competitors," Mahajan said, after flagging off the World Computer Literacy Day 2002 Campaign, organised by NIIT.

There was competition in the market and ultimately the customer should benefit, he said referring to the low tariff announced by BSNL.

Private cellular operators had protested against the BSNL rates saying that these are 'anti-competitive'. They have also indicated plans to resort to legal action against BSNL.
