Rs 40,000 crore outlay to reform SEBs

April 23, 2003 15:35 IST

In an attempt to improve financial viability of state electricity boards, the government has approved an outlay of Rs 40,000 crore to reform them during the Tenth Plan period, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Power Anant Geete said during the question hour that the accelerated power development and reforms programme had been approved by the Centre.

The programme aims at the upgradation of distribution system covering densely electrified zones focusing on urban and industrial areas.

He said half of the proposed outlay was earmarked as investment component and the rest as incentive component to encourage utilities to reduce cash losses.

Replying to a supplementary question, he said the programme included Rs 717 crore (Rs 7.17 billion) for Bihar.

Power dues: Twenty four states have signed a tripartite agreement with the central government and the Reserve Bank of India to clear dues worth Rs 37,400 crore (Rs 374 billion), Geete said in reply to another question.
