Reliance Infocomm on Tuesday filed new tariffs for its wireless-in-local-loop limited mobility services with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd also sent the new tariff structure for its cellular services to the regulator for approval.

The two firms revised their tariffs after TRAI sent them a notice last week to follow the interconnect usage charges, slated to come into effect from May 1. Tata Teleservices is also expected to announce new tariffs for WLL and fixed-line services on Wednesday.

Industry sources said Reliance had agreed to offer STD calls at 40 paise a minute to all other WLL operators- Tata Teleservices, Himachal Futuristic Communications Ltd, Shyam Telecom and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.

Reliance has been charging 40 paise a minute for STD calls within its own network, while charging Rs 4.80 per per minute for calls made to any other operator's network.

Reliance's offer ran into trouble after its competitors complained to the regulator that the tariff rates were discriminatory.  However, Reliance's new offer will mean calls from one WLL phone to another will now be charged at an uniform rate as other WLL operators are willing to reciprocate the move.

"We are open to the idea of having a tariff package for WLL-to-WLL calls. If Reliance makes an offer we can reciprocate by giving our subscribers the same benefit," a Tata Teleservices source said.

This will be similar to cellular operators' offer of a uniform rate for STD calls from one cell phone to another.

Sources said WLL operators might not restrict the offer of lower tariffs to STD calls. Subscribers might also get the benefit of lower tariffs for local calls made from a WLL phone to another.

However, TRAI will have to approve all these schemes first.
