Zee Telefilms Limited and the Steel Authority of India Limited, by their pace of wealth creation, have edged out seven other corporates, which had reported over a Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) gain in market capitalisation in a month. Reliance Industries Limited, however, remained atop as the largest wealth creator during July.

According to industry sources, only nine companies, including three public sector units, had gained over Rs 1,000 crore in market capitalisation, which is one of the yardsticks to assess wealth creation, and Reliance's market capitalisation witnessed an increase of over Rs 4,500 crore (Rs 45 billion) during the period.

With a market capitalisation of Rs 49,886 crore (Rs 498.86 billion), Reliance Industries cornered 30 per cent of the total market capitalisation of Rs 168,562 crore (Rs 1,685.62 billion) of the nine corporates, including Infosys, Bharti Tele-Ventures, Indian Oil Corporation, State Bank of India, Tata Iron and Steel Company, and Larsen & Toubro.

The growth in market capitalisation of all the nine biggies was about 13 per cent from Rs 1,49,264 crore (Rs 1,492.64 billion) in June, they said.

However, by growth in market capitalisation in one month, media major Zee ticked 37.4 per cent rise to Rs 4,998 crore (Rs 49.98 billion) in July against Rs 3,636 crore (Rs 36.36 billion) in June.

SAIL followed with 32.9 per cent growth to Rs 9,479 crore (Rs 94.79 billion) in July as compared to Rs 7,133 crore (Rs 71.33 billion) in the previous month.

Sources said the growth had to be seen in the context of a mere 5.14 per cent and 4.56 per cent growth in indices of the BSE Sensex and S&P CNX Nifty respectively.

Reliance Industries' market capitalisation could grow only by 10.1 per cent from Rs 45,326 crore (Rs 453.26 billion) in June.

In absolute terms, oil giant IOC, IT major Infosys and the country's largest State Bank followed RIL in market capitalisation.

State-owned IOC's market capitalisation was Rs 33,868 crore (Rs 338.68 billion) in July, up by 6.6 per cent from Rs 31,766 crore (Rs 317.66 billion) in the previous month, the sources said.

Infosys had a market capitalisation of Rs 23,895 crore (Rs 238.95 billion) in July, up 10.1 per cent from Rs 21,629 crore (Rs 216.29 billion) in the previous month and SBI had Rs 22,202 crore (Rs 222.02 billion), posting a growth of 9.8 per cent from Rs 20,220 crore (Rs 202.20 billion) in the previous month.
