Sensex gains 47 points at close

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 20 points at 5,812 and slipped to a low of 5,801 in early deals. Buying in heavyweights like Infosys, Reliance and SBI saw the index touching a high of 5,877 by noon. After moving in a narrow range till late noon, the Sensex closed with a gain of 47 points at 5,839.
Infosys was firm right from the opening bell, and closed with a gain of nearly a per cent (Rs 50) at Rs 5,564. Satyam was up Rs 4 at Rs 367. Wipro, however, dropped Rs 15 to Rs 1,738.
Reliance gained nearly 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 573. ITC was up Rs 3 at Rs 985. HLL was down a rupee at Rs 205.
ONGC witnessed profit-taking in noon deals, but still finished with a gain of more than 2% (Rs 18) at Rs 800. BHEL was up Rs 12 at Rs 508. SBI added Rs 10 to Rs 538.
Cipla gained more than 3% (Rs 44) to Rs 1,317. Ranbaxy was up Rs 12 at Rs 1,098.
ACC was up Rs 4 at Rs 246. Gujarat Ambuja and L&T also moved up, but Grasim was down Rs 11 at Rs 1,004.
Tata Motors advanced Rs 10 to Rs 452. Tisco was up nearly 4% (Rs 15) at Rs 444.
Hindalco gained 3% (Rs 39) to Rs 1,408. BSES was up 3% (Rs 14) at Rs 511. HDFC declined 2.6% (Rs 17) to Rs 644.
PSU scrips attracted a lot of buying today. Tamilnadu Petro zoomed nearly 16% to Rs 32. Container Corp jumped 10% (Rs 63) to Rs 665. IBP added 4% to Rs 857. Bongaigon, Nalco, HMT, IOC, GAIL and SCI also rallied today.
Public sector bank stocks, too, logged sharp gains. BoB gained more than 9% (Rs 20) to Rs 234. IDBI added 5% to Rs 62.
Select tech stocks also inched higher today. HCL Tech advanced 4% (Rs 11) to Rs 306. NIIT was up 2% at Rs 272. Polaris, Mastek and Digital also closed with gains.
Capital goods were back in action. Cummins India jumped 7% to Rs 128. Ingersoll Rand was up 4% at Rs 295. Siemens gained more than 4% to Rs 1,073. Crompton Greaves was also up 4% at Rs 170. ABB was up 2.5% at Rs 674.
