Decision on A-I, IA aircraft acquisition put off

January 15, 2003 01:36 IST

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Tuesday night is said to have put off a decision on the acquisition of aircraft by Air India and Indian Airlines.

The issue has been deferred for a month.

Indian Airlines had decided to acquire 43 aircraft and Air India 17.

The meeting, presided by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, reviewed the security scenario in the country and along its borders.

"It was a routine CCS meeting," External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha told reporters after the meeting, refusing to elaborate on the matters that were discussed.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant attended the meeting.

Defence Minister George Fernandes was not present as he is on a visit to Russia.
