HMT divestment decision in a week's time

March 17, 2003 14:43 IST

The government in a week's time will take a decision on the divestment of the three loss making units of Bangalore-based public sector undertaking HMT.

"We are going for the divestment of HMT. There are some technical hitches, but within a week's time, we will take the decision and it will come out clearly," Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Balasaheb Vikhe Patil told reporters in Bangalore on Monday.

Patil visited the electronics division of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and reviewed the company's operations and discussed future plans.

Patil said a time frame of six to nine months would be fixed for divesting stake in the three loss-making units of HMT, once a decision is taken.

"We want to divest. But, we want to get a better price. We have some units, we are deciding a time frame of six to nine months for divestment," he said.

Patil said the government had not looked into the offers made by private companies, when an announcement was made to divest 74 per cent of equity in five HMT units.

"We have not examined the offers. If the offer is viable, then there is no problem," he said.

The government had appointed international consultants Ernst & Young to invite bids for divestment of five HMT units last year.
