Satyam delves into three key initiatives

P V Vasanta Kumar in Hyderabad | May 15, 2003 13:20 IST

Satyam Computer Services has undertaken three critical leadership initiatives -- technology, business and delivery -- with special focus on the first one.

The initiatives, taken up at the beginning of this year, are being led by Satyam Learning Centre, the 75-member strategic training arm of the company.

They are aimed at developing the technology bandwidth of the company as well as improving employees' understanding of issues such as connectivity with business, selection of technology, etc.

The company has also, for the first time, roped in outsiders to train its employees in programmes developed on the lines of management development programmes conducted by Indian Institutes of Management.

The faculty for the programmes is drawn from some of the UK academic institutes, IIT Chennai and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore.

"Employees who undergo these internal certification programmes will be assigned with challenging projects and receive significant perks," said Rajul Asthana, assistant vice president and leader of Satyam Learning Centre.

He declines to quantify the perks that these employees receive.

The technology leadership initiative is all about building a supply chain of technocrats; a cadre of world-class tech savvy people who can innovate technological solutions for business problems or bet the company's technological future.

Such persons will play a major role in Satyam's services to its clients.

Graduates of this initiative will be the future leads of Satyam's global organisation, Asthana said.

The TLI has multi-level events such as global programming contests, design leadership programs, architecture programs, vendor specific programs and conferences to tie up all the community of practices.

Not all the programs are about technology. Business orientation programmes are interspersed regularly where candidates familiarize themselves with business domains, facets and challenges.

To make its employees move up the technology track, Satyam has so far conducted four TLI programmes in the past five months, two in data warehousing, one in technical architecture and the other in software design.

It is now planning to conduct a project management certification and delivery leadership programmes in July for project managers and program managers.

Another initiative, a knowledge base of challenging case studies called 'The Industry Connect' is under compilation by SLC.

These cases will highlight real-life situations where innovative solutions were offered for demanding challenges and serve as examples.

TLI is also involving leading technology vendors like Microsoft, IBM, Oracle in bringing their industry practices into Satyam.
