Sensex loses 49 points on heavy selling

The Sensex commenced with a gain of 15 points at 4,955. Early buying saw the index touch a high of 4,981 and moved in positive territory till late morning deals.

The markets shaved off its gains in the afternoon trades, but came under relentless selling pressure towards the closing hours following heavy sell-offs in the cement, tech, PSUs and select heavyweight stocks.

After slipping below the 4,900 levels to touch a low of 4,875, the Sensex finally settled with a loss of 49 points at 4,891. The Nifty lost 16 points to close at 1,564.

While 11 Sensex stocks advanced, 19 declined today. The volume of shares traded and its value totalled 2.69 crore and Rs 1,056.02 crore, respectively.

Reliance slipped from higher levels, and dropped nearly 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 466. The counter clocked a volume of over 20.43 lakh on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 96 crore.

While ITC was up Rs 2 at Rs 862, HLL closed up a rupee at Rs 183. The FMCG major registered a volume of over 11.54 lakh on the BSE with a value of Rs 21 crore.

SBI at Rs 465 (down Rs 8 or 2%) and BHEL at Rs 436 (down Rs 20 or 4%) ended at lower levels. HPCL, however, came off from higher levels and closed up a rupee at Rs 346. Over 12.29 lakh HPCL shares changed hands on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 42 crore.

Infosys displayed mixed trends, and ended with a marginal gain of Rs 4 at Rs 4,614. While Wipro shed 2% (Rs 26) to Rs 1,414, Satyam lost a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 315. Over 56.74 lakh Satyam shares changed hands on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 180 crore.

Grasim (down Rs 38 or 4% to Rs 868), L&T (down Rs 8 or 2% to Rs 387), ACC (down Rs 5 or 2% to Rs 225) and Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 4 to Rs 268) ended with steep losses.

Hero Honda slumped nearly 3% (Rs 11) to Rs 384. Tata Motors declined a per cent (Rs 3) to Rs 384, with the volumes surging over 36.61 lakh on the BSE. Bajaj, however, managed to garner gains, and added a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 931 on a lacklustre day.

Dr. Reddy's dropped 3% (Rs 35) to Rs 1,238. While Ranbaxy ended marginally lower at Rs 996, Cipla, however, closed up a rupee at Rs 1,117.

ONGC at Rs 618 (down Rs 13 or 2%), ICICI Bank at Rs 236 (down Rs 6 or 3%), Tisco at Rs 355 (down Rs 9 or 2%) and BSES at Rs 470 (down Rs 6) slumped on heavy selling. More than 37 lakh Tisco shares changed hands on the BSE with a value of Rs 133 crore. Tata Power, however, rose 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 270. Zee traded off-highs and closed up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 137, with a volume of over 12.37 lakh traded on the BSE.

Digital and Mphasis gained 2% each to Rs 576 (up Rs 14) and Rs 531 (up Rs 10), respectively. i-flex closed up a tad at Rs 702. Mastek, however, lost 2% (Rs 4) to Rs 227.

Balaji Telefilms dropped nearly 4% (Rs 3) to Rs 78. Padmalaya Telefilms, which hit a high of Rs 89, slipped on selling pressure, and closed down a per cent at Rs 85. Sri Adhikari gained nearly 2% to Rs 72. While Mukta Arts closed up a per cent at Rs 63, Saregama ended marginally higher at Rs 53.

Markets @ 1515

The Sensex towards the closing hours has slipped deeper into the red following relentless selling pressure across the board. It is now down 48 points at 4,893. The Nifty has shed 19 points to 1,561.

Reliance has shed 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 465. ITC (up Rs 4 to Rs 864) and HLL (up a rupee to Rs 183) are holding on to their gains.

SBI at Rs 464 (down Rs 9 or 2%) and BHEL at Rs 439 (down Rs 17 or 4%) are reeling under sustained selling presure. HPCL, however, is marginally up at Rs 345.

Grasim (down Rs 42 or 5% to Rs 863), Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 7 or 2% to Rs 265), ACC (down Rs 6 or 3% to Rs 223) and L&T (down Rs 7 or 2% to Rs 388) have slipped deeper into the red.

Infosys has slipped marginally lower to Rs 4,604, down Rs 7. While Wipro has slumped 2% (Rs 34) to Rs 1,406, Satyam has declined 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 313,

Hero Honda is trading off-gains with a loss of 3% (Rs 11) at Rs 383. Tata Motors is trading with a loss of a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 382. Bajaj, however, is holding on to its gains at Rs 932 - up Rs 8.

While Dr. Reddy's has dropped 3% (Rs 38) to Rs 1,235, Ranbaxy is down Rs 2 at Rs 994. Cipla, however, is up a tad at Rs 1,117.

ICICI Bank at Rs 235 (down Rs 7 or 3%), BSES at Rs 467 (down Rs 10 or 2%), ONGC at Rs 618 (down Rs 13 or 2%) and Tisco at Rs 355 (down Rs 10 or 3%) have come under relentless selling pressure. Tata Power and Zee, however, are trading with marginal gains at Rs 264 and Rs 137, respectively.

Markets @ 1310

The Sensex, after a steady opening session, has buckled in early noon trades on selling in PSUs, tech, cement, pharma and select heavyweight and auto stocks. It is now down 30 points at 4,909.

The Nifty has lost 11 points to 1,569.

Reliance has slipped from higher levels with a loss of a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 468. While ITC has added Rs 5 to Rs 865, HLL is up Rs 2 at Rs 184.

BHEL has lost more ground, and the counter is down a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 450. SBI has declined a per cent (Rs 5) to Rs 468. HPCL, however, has trimmed its gains on selling pressure, and is now up Rs 3 at Rs 347.

Wipro has shed nearly 2% (Rs 21) to Rs 1,420. Satyam is trading lower by Rs 2 at Rs 316. Infosys, though trading off-highs, is up a per cent (Rs 54) at Rs 4,665 on steady buying support.

Grasim, on further weakness due to selling pressure, has dropped 2% (Rs 22) to Rs 883. Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 3 to Rs 269), ACC (down a rupee to Rs 228) and L&T (down Rs 4 to Rs 391), too, have exhibited weakness.

While Hero Honda has lost 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 387, Tata Motors is down Rs 2 at Rs 386. Bajaj at Rs 931 (up Rs 7) is holding on to its gains.

Dr. Reddy's has extended its losses by Rs 12 to Rs 1,261. Ranbaxy also is trading in the red at Rs 988 - down Rs 8. Cipla, however, is marginally up Rs 3 at Rs 1,120.

Hindalco at Rs 1,180 (down Rs 10), ICICI Bank at Rs 240 (down Rs 3), ONGC at Rs 628 (down Rs 3) and Tisco at Rs 360 (down Rs 5) are trading at lower levels. Tata Power, however, is up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 266. Zee is up 2% at Rs 138.

Profit-taking in select old and new economys stocks has narrowed the gains of the index, although buying in select tech and PSU stocks has kept the markets in positive territory. The Sensex is now up five points at 4,945.

The Nifty has slipped from higher levels on selling pressure, and is down a point at 1,579.

Infosys has shed some gains on profit-taking, but is still up 2% (Rs 86) at Rs 4,697. While Satyam, too, has curbed its gains on profit-taking at Rs 321 (up Rs 3), Wipro is marginally up Rs 2 at Rs 1,443.

ITC, after a steady opening, has moved up a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 866 on fresh buying support. Reliance and HLL are marginally down at Rs 473 and Rs 182, respectively.

HPCL is unchanged with a gain of 2% (Rs 6) at Rs 351. SBI is up a rupee at Rs 474. While BHEL has lost Rs 2 to Rs 454, MTNL is down a rupee at Rs 112.

Gujarat Ambuja and ACC are still up Rs 2 each at Rs 274 and Rs 231, respectively, but Grasim has witnessed selling in its counter, and has lost Rs 5 to Rs 900. L&T is trading with a rupee loss at Rs 394.

Bajaj has inched up by Rs 5 to Rs 929. Tata Motors is trading in a narrow range, with a per cent gain (Rs 4) at Rs 391. Hero Honda, however, has registered losses to Rs 391 (down Rs 3), after early gains.

While Cipla is trading off-highs at Rs 1,125 (up Rs 8), Dr. Reddy's has slipped into the red with a loss of Rs 5 at Rs 1,267. Ranbaxy also is trading weak with a rupee loss at Rs 994.

Tata Power and Zee have gained 2% each to Rs 270 (up Rs 6) and Rs 138 (up Rs 3), respectively. HDFC and HDFC Bank are trading on mixed notes, with HDFC gaining Rs 2 to Rs 530, and HDFC Bank slipping into the red at Rs 302 - down Rs 2.

Markets @ 1115

The markets is witnessing a steady trend as no major buying is seen in any of the stocks, which propelled the gains of the index in early trades. The Sensex, as a result, is now up 31 points at 4,971.

The Nify also is unchanged from its early gains, and is up nine points at 1,589.

Infosys is trading firm with a gain of 2% (Rs 114) at Rs 4,725. While Wipro has added Rs 17 to Rs 1,458, Satyam has edged up by Rs 5 to Rs 323,

ITC is up Rs 2 at Rs 862. While Reliance is up a rupee at Rs 475, HLL is trading marginally lower at Rs 182.

HPCL has gained nearly 3% (Rs 9) to Rs 353. BHEL is down a tad at Rs 456. SBI is trading lower by Rs 2 at Rs 471.

Grasim, L&T, Gujarat Ambuja and ACC are up Rs 2 each at Rs 908, Rs 397, Rs 274 and Rs 232, respectively.

Dr. Reddy's and Cipla, after a steady opening, are up a per cent each at Rs 1,290 (up Rs 17) and Rs 1,133 (up Rs 16), respectively. Ranbaxy is up a rupee at Rs 997.

Tata Motors is trading with a per cent gain (Rs 6) at Rs 393. Bajaj is trading off-highs on profit-taking, and is now up Rs 3 at Rs 927. Hero Honda is marginally up at Rs 395.

Hindalco has added Rs 10 to Rs 1,200. Tata Power at Rs 271 (up Rs 7 or 3%), Zee at Rs 139 (up Rs 4 or 3%) and ONGC at Rs 634 (up Rs 3) are trading at higher levels. Tisco, however, is down a rupee at Rs 364.

Sri Adhikari and Saregama have clocked 4% gains each to Rs 74 (up Rs 3) and Rs 55 (up Rs 2), respectively. While Mukta Arts has advanced 3% to Rs 64, Padmalaya Telefilms has gained 2% to Rs 88. Balaji Tele is flat at Rs 81

Markets @ 1010

The Sensex gained 15 points to open at 4,955.

Almost all the stocks are trading in the green, which has seen the Sensex gain further ground, and is now up 34 points at 4,974.

The Nifty has added 10 points to 1,590.

Infosys has clocked 2 per cent gains (Rs 119) to Rs 4,730. While Wipro has commenced with a gain of Rs 11 at Rs 1,452, Satyam is up Rs 2 at Rs 320.ITC has added Rs 5 to Rs 865.

While Reliance is up Rs 2 at Rs 476, HLL is down a rupee at Rs 182.HPCL has moved up 2 per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 351, continuing from where it had left on Monday.

BHEL is up a rupee at Rs 457. SBI, however, is trading marginally lower at Rs 472.Bajaj has gained a per cent (Rs 11) to Rs 935.

While Tata Motors has moved up a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 391, Hero Honda is up Rs 2 at Rs 397. Zee has scaled up 3 per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 140 on sustained buying support.
