Reliance Industries has shut the fluid catalytic cracker unit at its 27 million tonne per annum Jamnagar refinery following a leak in one pipeline.

It, however, said the closure would not affect its operations and "normalcy was expected in two weeks".

The Reliance stock closed 2.6 per cent lower at Rs 467.90 on Tueday, against Monday's close of Rs 480.85.

A cracker is the fundamental unit of a refinery. Crude is distilled in a cracker and the distillates are tapped at different points.

Reliance informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that "the fluid catalytic cracker unit at the Jamnagar refinery had been shut due to a leakage".

The company had taken immediate safety measures, avoiding any human or environmental damage, and all other units of the refinery were operating normally, it added.

The company also pointed out that the "closure was not expected to affect the company's performance". A team of technical experts was assessing the situation and normalcy was expected in about two weeks, it said.
