January 02, 2004 18:56 IST

Hyundai Motor India said on Friday that its car sales surged by 83 per cent in December 2003 to 12,382 units, driven by rising demand for compact car Santro and mid-size model Accent.

Domestic sales grew 23.5 per cent to 6,241 units while exports climbed over three-fold to 6,141 units during the month, a company statement said.

Sales during the calendar year 2003 grew 35.7 per cent to 1,50,741 units.

It included 1,18,676 units of Santro, 30,613 units of Accent, 1,264 units of luxury sedan Sonata, and 188 units of sports-utility-vehicle Terracan.

Hyundai's domestic sales during 2003 grew 17 per cent to 1,20,308 units, including 93,854 units of Santro.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company, the local unit produces Santro, Accent and Sonata at a plant near Chennai.

Terracan is imported from South Korea and sold as a fully-built unit.

The country's second-biggest carmaker is investing an additional $250 million in expanding the capacity of its plant to 250,000 units annually as part of a plan by the parent to make it a global export hub for small cars.
