Vote-on-account in Feb; no Economic Survey

January 16, 2004 19:49 IST

The pre-budget Economic Survey is unlikely to be presented this year, but Finance Minister Jaswant Singh might outline a quarterly review of the economy along with the vote-on-account expected in early February.

"There will be no Economic Survey. But a quarterly review of the economy, as mandated by the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, would be presented along with the vote-on-account," official sources said on Friday.

However, the Economic Survey may be tabled at a time when the new government presents its Budget for the full year, sources said.

The National Democratic Alliance government is planning an early Lok Sabha elections tipped to be held sometime in March-end or April.

The government has already come out with the mini-Budget in January second week giving indirect tax sops, which is expected to cost the exchequer Rs 12,000 crore (Rs 120 billion) in a full year.

There were reports that Finance Minister Jaswant Singh might come out with another round of tax sops mainly on excise this time to boost the domestic industry and exports.

This is not for the first time that the Economic Survey is being delayed as it has happened in the past when government went for early polls.
