Sensex gains 62 points at close

The Sensex on Tuesday opened with a gain of 31 points at 5,616. Hectic buying led by PSU, cement, tech, auto and other select old economy counters lifted the index to an intra-day high of 5,677 in early deals.

After moving in a range-bound mode during the late morning deals, the index, in late noon trades, shed some gains on profit-taking in select stocks to touch an intra-day low of 5,616.

The Sensex closed the day with a gain of 62 points at 5,647. The Nifty added 26 points to end at 1,793.

While 23 Sensex stocks advanced, seven declined today.

SBI scaled up 3.52% (Rs 22) to close at Rs 640. BHEL moved up 2.16% (Rs 12) to Rs 589. While HPCL gained 2.59% (Rs 11) to Rs 452, MTNL was up 2.23% (Rs 3) at Rs 147.

ACC (up Rs 14 or 5.13% to Rs 286), L&T (up Rs 14 or 2.55% to Rs 564) and Gujarat Ambuja (up Rs 13 or 4% to Rs 336) ended with sharp gains. Grasim, however, finished with a loss of Rs 5 at Rs 1,152.

Hero Honda jumped 3.35% (Rs 15) to Rs 478. While Tata Motors gained 1.96% (Rs 9) to Rs 475, Bajaj ended marginally higher at Rs 927.

Satyam advanced 4.60% (Rs 14) to Rs 324. While Wipro appreciated by 2.68% (Rs 42) to Rs 1,594, Infosys ended with a steady gain of Rs 33 at Rs 5,216.

Hindalco shot up 3.42% (Rs 36) to Rs 1,103. ONGC (up Rs 23 or 2.84% to Rs 841) also attracted considerable buying support. HDFC advanced 2.61% (Rs 16) to Rs 621. While Tata Power perked up 3.89% (Rs 14) to Rs 376, Tisco was up 2.16% (Rs 7) at Rs 350.

ICICI Bank, however, ended with a loss of 2.54% (Rs 8) at Rs 307.

Reliance was marginally up by Rs 2 at Rs 531. While ITC lost 1.28% (Rs 14) to Rs 1,062, HLL closed down a tad at Rs 142.

While Cipla dropped 1.76% (Rs 25) to Rs 1,374, Dr. Reddy's was down Rs 3 at Rs 866.
