Airtel's EDGE in Kerala

November 29, 2004 17:50 IST

Mobile service provider Airtel will launch enhanced data for global evolution-EDGE services in Kolkata, Jaipur, Chennai and some other cities by March 2005.

Announcing the launch of EDGE in Kerala, Don Price, group technical officer and director Bharti Tele Services, said that with data transfer speeds between 100-200 kbps, customers would be able to experience rich multimedia content, including live TV, live camera applications and multi-player games on their EDGE-enabled mobile handsets.

The content also includes music and file transfer, picture download, e-mail download and all other content on Airtel live - the multi access entertainment portal on Airtel mobile phones.

Initially, the new service will be available in Kochi and nearby areas. Within a few months, all areas of the state would be covered, Price said.

T Elango, chief operating officer Bharti Cellular, Kerala, said the launch of EDGE would further drive convergence in the entertainment and communication space.

Airtel customers would be able to view continuous and real time feed of news and entertainment channels. To begin with, there will be feeds from channels like CNBC, Aaj Tak and Asianet. In India, Hutch and Airtel are providing the new service.
