The government is considering relaxing import norms for automobiles being brought in from the European Union. The requirement that the importer obtain a homologation certificate from the country of origin is likely to be axed.

Officials told Business Standard last week the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade held an inter-ministerial meeting to review the import norms for automobiles.

Officials from the heavy industries ministry and representatives from the Pune-based Automobile Research Association of India participated.

Officials said the DGFT had proposed to the ARAI to do away with the requirement that used and new cars (completely built units) imported from the EU obtain a homologation certificate issued at the time of manufacture.
