September 24, 2004 14:59 IST

IT major Wipro Corporation will be allotted 85-acre land at the proposed Knowledge Industry township at Sholinganallur in the outskirts of Chennai, for expanding its software development centre, Tamil Nadu IT Secretary Vivek Harinarain has said.

"Wipro is likely to be the first company to be allotted land at the Knowledge Industry Township," he said.

The State government plans to develop 500 acres of land in the first phase of the township.

Wipro Corporation's existing software development centre is located on a 15-acre plot, adjacent to the proposed Township. "By alloting 85-acres, Wipro can own a total of 100 acres at one location," he said.

Sudeep Jain, managing director, Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu, said a total of 5,000 acre land would be brought under the Knowledge Industry Township at Sholinganallur.

Fifty per cent of the proposed 5000 acres will be earmarked for greenery and water bodies. Wipro will be allowed to develop its own centre at the Township on the 85-acre land.

Jain said the entire Township would be developed by reputed private agencies, after inviting tenders. "We are in the preliminary stages," he added.

Infosys, TCS and Satyam Computers have development centers near the proposed Knowledge Industry Township.
