The moment of truth for someone who has taken insurance cover is when he goes to make a claim. Today, insurance companies are witnessing very high levels of employee attrition. So, there's no guaranteeing that the gentleman who sold your policy would be around when you go to make the claim. So what do you do? File the claim yourself, of course. And, for that, you first need to get in touch with the insurer.

Here, we give a list of phone numbers, addresses and e-mails of all insurance companies, both life and general, in India.

If your insurer is satisfied with your claim, he will pay the settlement. But, on occasion, you may not be able to bridge your differences with your insurer, who might refuse the claim or pay less than what you think you deserve. To break that stalemate, you would need the help of the ombudsmen.

These are persons who have been appointed specifically to solve such problems. There are 12 of them and depending on where you are located, there is a specific one who would have the jurisdiction to look into your problem. The decision of the ombudsman is binding on insurance companies, but not on you. If you are dissatisfied, you can still go to the courts.

Once you pay your premium or get your claim, would there be any tax implications? There are three sections in the Income Tax Act that exempt insurance premiums and maturity proceeds from taxes. They are:

Section 80C. Under this section, premium of up to Rs 1 lakh can be claimed for tax deduction.

Section 10(10)D. This section specifies that maturity and death benefits are tax free.

Section 80DD. Deduction of up to Rs 50,000 from gross total income in respect of medical treatment or premium paid towards a life insurance policy taken for the benefit of handicapped dependent.
